I do not want to bbe in breach so if it is true, pls point it out to me where its stated (for the love of god I cant find it in the rules) and i will remove from the other site.

thanks

Was the person who sent you the message a member of Site Council?

As long as it is your photo, You are allowed to submit/post it anywhere/anytime you want. Some people here might frawn on it, But there are no rules or laws against it.

Although it is allowed, the main reason for not doing so is that voting on DPC is supposed to be anonymous, and posting it elsewhere before voting ends will make it known who submitted it to DPC. This could work for or against you (or not affect you at all) depending on your reputation around here; and it could potentially hurt you if the voter is annoyed by your having posted it elsewhere.

But another thing is that most voters will give higher points to something that is very original, so this could cost you if the voter has already seen the photo elsewhere.

ETA: Once voting is over, then by all means submit it any other place you want.

That is not a rule. I post my photos on my blog, my website, submit them to other contests, put them on Flickr, etc. Go ahead and post your photos wherever you want to.

I personally will not vote on an image if I've seen it elsewhere (and know who posted it).

I just make sure that I don't post a photo to another site while it is in voting. Once the challenge is over, I post them wherever I like. I have seen many other DPC photos on other sites also after challenge voting has ended.

Because there are so many DPC people in my Flickr contacts, I usually wait until after the challenge is over to put them on Flickr. However, I keep most of the DPC people as regular contacts, so if I do want to put something on flickr for feedback, I upload it so only friends and family can see it.

That's a good idea.

Same here, and especially if I have given feedback on it. However, if I know whose it is because of style, or subject I will vote on it because the identity has not been compromised otherwise and I could be wrong.

I have to believe that the Best of Year challenges are a bit of an exception to this thinking. Last year, I recognized a lot of photos that I had seen as outtakes, side challenge/portfolio entries, etc. from the previous year. My own entry was one that I had posted previously and gotten good feedback on (though I did hide it while voting was on). I wouldn't do this with any regular weekly challenge though.

Thought I'd mention it with one coming up...

The only thing that's not allowed is recruiting voters via other sites. If someone stumbles on your photo by accident. So what. If you've deliberately pointed someone to your photo elsewhere and have in any way requested they come here to vote on it then that's a big no no.

What she said... As long as you don't post it and ask for people to come vote on it over here at DPC, there should be no problem.

As another mentioned, I also do not vote on an image if I know who took it.

Agreed!

Yes, occasionally, I'll post a picture on Facebook, then realize it might make a good challenge photo -- but I always end up not submitting it to the challenge because of how anonymity is stressed here (for good reasons). I also think Erik is right and there are people who will vote a photo down if they've seen that the photographer has posted it on other sites where other dpc people can see it. I even saw a comment to that effect once.

This makes no sense to me....photographers voting it down because they saw it on a completely unrelated sight that has nothing to do with DPC whatsoever. If you want to post a photo you submitted here on facebook you should without regard...or anyother site you should be able to. As long as you don't post anyting that says anything about DPC.

I'd like to think (and/or believe) that people don't vote if they know who the photographer is...but I don't think this is the case. The more critical thing is not to vote if you are friends or hate the photographer personally. Half the time on this site you can look at a photograph and know who the photographer is (and not have to have seen the photo somewhere else). That's part of the reason we have a challenge up called Signature Styles where people are going to try to guess the photographer based on the style of shooting. Some people use the same borders all the time (which I would argue is pretty close to a watermark or adding your name as text). Peoples work has become recognizable...so do you not vote on people's work who's starting to become recognizable?

Wouldn't recognizing someone's style be pretty close to if you saw the same photo from that photographer on a different site? We post our work on here for feedback and learning....why can't I do the same on another site. There is no exclusivity contract here on DPC. People say you should wait until after voting...by the time that comes around I'll probably have another photo I want feedback on.

I work with alot of people (models) and they want previews of their photos. I normally submit some of my photos to DPC to get a feed back how editing is going. So should I make the model wait to view her photo because someone on DPC may see it on my modeling website and vote it down?

Don't worry about posting photos on other sites...if you want to you should. If it's a good photo people will vote it high no matter what. If it's bad, they will vote it down no matter what.
