Come on! If you are going to leave a comment, and a score of 5, you could at least tell me how to improve it. Or give some indication of why it was only a 5.

If people do not like this pic, I really want to know why. A shot like this is one I would really like to perfect. Was the crop wrong? Color? Lighting?

Are people getting tired of leaving real comments?

Zeissman--I know you are asking this in a joking way, right? Right? Should I remind you of one of YOUR comments on my picture a couple of weeks ago. "Someone needs a pore cleaning." [On the Road]

How in the heck is that going to help my photography?

Take your five, take your comments, and enjoy them.

hee hee hee, That was the joke. I do not mind comments like "Cute kid" or "Freaky" or whatever, but then to tell me what my score was, that really leaves me wanting more.

I left a lot of really stupid comments to "On the Road" but I hope I did not dangle a score in front of anyone without saying why. And I hope I did not offend anyone.

I have a lot of respect for the work of the person that left this comment, and I would sure like to know how he thinks this photo could be improved. I got some good comments on my first picture that I tried to take into account her, and my second (for On the Road), was a throw away. I sat out the last two because I did not have good photos.

And Karma, I am enjoying this. I am not upset. But this a the kind of photography I really like to do, and would like to improve. This is my first time breaking 5, in three challenges, I am very happy.

But I am curisious if people feel they are leaving fewer real critiques. It gets hard with the volume of work.

I am the guilty party on that critique. I will elaborate if I can in private if you wish...

I know, but I did not want to mention you by name. I would love it if you eloborated. Either here, or by email. I have my link in my profile.

It may be better if you used email so you do not tip anyone off to wish photo it is.

Thanks for being a sport John.

Zeiss: with the number of submissions it is hard to leave good comments. I think some people may do like I do though -- give an initial vote, then throughout the week go back and adjust with comments. The other thing is that with middle of the road pics, 5's and 6's, there really is not a lot of comments, compared to the lower one (under 3) and the highest ones (over 8).

Congrats on busting 5!

Zeiss, You should have email....

Karmat, I think i probably did create some amount of 'pissedoffedness' with Zeiss when I left his comment :)) I didn't mean to but as I go back and look at it, I have felt the same way when I received similar comments. I have learned something today and I will use it to my benefit in the future...

This is odd... Maybe I just make more obvious mistakes but I''ve gotten 15 comments and I''d say 10 to 12 of them have good solid advice or at least said what they didn''t like. Normally it was the same thing and something I put in on purpose, but now I know it didn''t have much mass appeal. There''s a couple of non-comment comments, but they seem the exception, not the rule...

I guess if your not getting useful comments, maybe it because your doing things right :)

btw ~ 5 sounds good :) I''ll take a 5 :)

Qyl

PS ~ I''m still waiting to go a whole week without being told "It would be better in Black & White" :) Problem is, I did Black and White film for soooo long, that I can''t be satisfied with any BW I can ''conjure up'' in Printshop yet. Still trying though :)

Better in black and white is purely subjective in most cases... I more often comment that black and white doesn't work as well as color would.. .I LOVE black and white and I do a ton of it, but there is a time and place for it for sure. Some images that are not so hot in color can be awesome in black and white though...

Greetings all !!!

I have received 12 comments on my image. Most of them are very informative and constructive. I agree with much that is being said and appreciate the feedback. When there are obvious problems such as OOF, incorrect DOF, poor lighting, unappealing cropping, etc. it is easier for people to make technical comments.

What kind of comments can one really make if the image is technically sound but does not have the emotional impact that it should to be a highly scored photograph? I try to remember that most people have an emotional investment in their images so I rarely comment whenever there is a difference in taste on my part.

In your opinions, should technically sound photos be scored highly if the subject is unappealing to the voter?

I have seen so many technically sound images of insects and flowers over the past few weeks... They are all beginning to look the same. I am finding myself rating new subjects that are technically sound higher than good shots of subject matter I have seen many, many times in this and previous challenges. I still appreciate good composition and editing but I seem to appreciate ingenuity more :) Go figure ...

It is completely within your discretion as to how much "weight" to give the "originality" component of your vote. I probably lean the way you do, at least as far as giving "bonus points" to an original or difficult to obtain image, in that I usully cut those more slack on the technical side. But many others here regularly vote up technically excellent photos whether or not they find the subject personally appealing.

BTW: My cute kid is 5, bu I never leav that as a comment...

Paul

Wow, I feel very priviledged at this point. I have 21 comments on my photo and most are very helpful. Overall, I have seen more insightful comments being left instead of the "from the hip" smart remarks that were being left on many photos a couple of months ago. There will always be some mean spirited voters, but I think overall our members are doing a great job with the comments.

I've gotten some silly comments, but hte ones that tell me how to change my lighting for better results, etc. are VERY helpful. That's the kind of comment that really is worth the time to leave it. With 175 photos to score, I didn't leave commetns this week, but then, technically I have so little experience that my comments would be pretty dull.

Do you think the new requirement will increase the number of "nice - 5" comments left? Perhaps we should just be prepared to accept it.
