I noticed (only now) in the recent November Free Study that whilst 364 people entered, only about 164 odd people bothered to vote.
What's up with that???? You go through all that effort of shooting and fine tuning and then pfffft nada.
Seems a bit ridiculous then that there are all these complaints about lack of comments and crap scores but less than HALF the actual entrants voted in the challenge they took part in!...(or so the stats suggest)

Place: 1 out of 364
Avg (all users): 7.0429

The October Free Study suffered a similar fate:

Place: 1 out of 403

Avg (participants): 7.0880
Avg (non-participants): 7.3333

September, ditto!

If I dig deeper I'll see how the other FS fare...it looks like a pattern, why?

i dont vote in challenges i've entered. others might do the same.
12/09/2009 02:01:01 PM · #3
I only voted about 40% of the challenge. So if everyone who entered did the same then it's unlikely that any image would get 300+ votes.

That sucks! Why wouldn't you do all of the voting. It takes on an extra second to hit the number key to register a vote. I'm noticing quite a few people are viewing my images, but not voting on them.

Some people prefer to take more than a second to vote on an image. Many people prefer to take time to soak up a shot, understand the message, and not be a 1-second voter just looking for quick-fix eye-candy.

Having said that I can't remember the last time I personally voted on a FS. I find it hard enough to get time to shoot let alone vote.

I don't cherry pick. I view all of them. I vote as many as I can in the order presented. Sometimes I run out of time. Sometimes I run out of interest. I also don't speed-vote. If I'm going to give an image a number you can be sure I've thought about it.

Every image I vote on I view at least twice. I don't think that's uncommon. So it may not be the case that lot's more people are viewing and not voting as you think. They may just be looking more than once.

No one wants to vote. They just want to enter, get tons of praise, and bitch if it doesn't go their way.

Dang. I'm getting old. Really old. Typos everywhere. Mis-spelled words, missing words. Gah.

Threes for everyone in the next Free Study.

Registered users can look, but not vote, on Members only challenges.

Some people (like KaDi) might spend a lot longer than you think to view the image before they cast a vote; I only voted on 28% (101) of the FS images but commented on all of those. Those images with longer comments had something like 3-5 minutes each of looking and typing and looking again. I'll often 100% vote in smaller challenges but in the FS, I do things a bit differently.

I'm not saying that your general premise isn't right - I'm just saying we can't know the multitude of reasons why people don't vote. Perhaps you should suggest a site poll and collect some data and then perhaps we could find a partial solution. What would happen if the percentage needed for scores to count was raised to 30% - what sort of increase in the number of votes would we expect to see?

I think, even in your sarcastic cynicism, you've put more truth down on the page than most would like to admit.

There are just too many images to effectively vote when you have limited time. Perhaps if the competition had fewer entries there would be greater participation in voting. To address that issue maybe the contest could be broken into categories like landscapes, macros, people, architecture, etc. Obviously a lot more work for the site operators and possibly beyond the scope of this venue. Personally, I would like to see a frequent competition where there are no date restrictions....I have a lot of terrific images that I can't enter because they were made outside existing competition dates.

This was a rare freestudy for me in that I did vote 100%. Usually I get to only 25-30% of them.

Sometimes it really is just a matter of lack of time. :-/

I find them depressing. Too many wonderful images.

Actually, I think this is the first free study in which I've voted 100%. Which is really dumb. If you want to see incredible photos and learn from them, you should look at the best of the best. I'm going to try harder to vote 100% more often -- my new years resolution, I guess. But I do find it overwhelming. They all start to run together after awhile...

I think what made the difference for me this time is that I did the voting in small chunks. Perhaps 5-10 entries at a time. Another thing that made the difference is that I have gotten some positive feedback lately about some of my sillier comments. I found myself having a lot of fun with them.

When I vote a Free Study (and I really do enjoy voting in Free Studies), I do it over the course of the week. I try to do 25% at a time if I can to make sure I have time to get to them all. I don't usually get to comment as much as I'd like, but I do try to see everything. It really is quite a treat most times.

I've been shooting for and then not entering many challenges of late. I have been voting, but I view all shots first, then go back and vote them in the order they are presented.
My thought...We have voting available for more than just a couple of hours. Should anyone really want to vote the entire challenge, do so in bits, don't look at it as a punishment tat requires all entries to be voted on in one sitting. We've had larger challenges before and lots of folks voting. my 2¢. (The pain meds have worn off and I'm almost able to complete an entire thought!@ Ooooooooh, lol!)

As for the OP, the holiday season in the USA this year has been fast and close together. As the holidays get closer, participation usually wains a bit. I agree with the school of thought that many that enter, don't vote that challenge. If participation is slowing and these folks are participating yet not voting because of an entry....the odds of mega votes received goes down. And like Deb said...IMO, of late...more people seem to be wanting nothing more than "feel good", "Looky at me" responses to their work and don't want to put the effort in to participate in full (repay the favor!).

I need a nap, lol....

I haven't voted in for ever. Haven't entered at my usual rate either. I have so much going it is mind boggling.

So my hands are you, for not voting and being very very lapse at the Critique Club. (I fail miserably!)

I also don't vote in challenges that I'm entered in, but I do like to size up the competition : )

I try to vote on as many other challenges as I can, but due to my schedule, I don't vote as often as I'd like. On the challenges I do vote on, I try to leave as many comments as I can, especially on the images I vote lower on (or on the awesome ones that I think can benefit from some change). I do look at every image in the challenge, even though I've never actually made it to 100% voting.

Like many others, and because I don't have high-speed, I simply don't have the time to devote to voting. I do try to make up for it by writing critiques though.

I was thinking about putting together a side challenge for 2009 to see who can vote on 100% of all the challenges, with tiebreaks to whoever leaves the most comments. You think anyone would go for it?

I am the opposite. As much as possible, I vote 100% of the challenges entered & rarely score the ones that I don't enter. In saying that, in the November Free Study, there was one photograph I didn't score & that was because I was with the photographer when that photograph was taken. I always take my time & voting is always done over several days. Leaving comments is a whole different story. I have to admit that I have slowed down in that area.

same here. I rarely vote in the challenges I don't enter. I try to vote the challenges that I do enter, because I learn quite a bit that way.
