I just received Photoshop 8 and I also have Aperture 2. I really would like to frame pictures by either adding a border or putting a thin line within the picture or both. I hope that makes sense but I am not sure how to do this. I don't think I can do it with Aperture but I am pretty I can do this with PS. Could someone give me some tips or a good resource where I can find out how to do this?

Thank you!

I'm assuming you are talking about Photoshop Elements 8. If so the easiest way I find is to do it at your final step when you resize the image for the web. I resize the image to 800 pixels on the long side minus whatever number of pixels I want to add aa a border. I then resize the canvas to add the border using the availalbe pixels up to 800 on the long side. It is easy to do and you can do it in multiple steps if you want to add multiple color borders. Many times I will use a thin 2 pixel line first and then a thicker black line in the next step. You can also use the arrows at the bottom of the resize box to determine which lines get drawn, top bottom only or left right only, etc.

Hopefull that is clear.

I actually do the opposite...I do all my final steps then I re-size canvas then the picture and save for web...(this could be totally wrong..but it works for me...) then it is just trial and error trying to get the balance you want with any extra lines in a picture

and just some examples...

kicadium Kija, did you get the answer to your question? I was thinking about this last night (actually very early this am) that I didn't give you as full of an answer as what I could have....

I have Elements 7 (hoping for 8 at Christmas) I use borders all the time. I personally think that borders add a "frame" to my picture since I can not place them in a frame on my table side it is my way of "vertually" framing my pictures. There is alot of debate out there about borders...do what you like and forget the "I like the picture but not the border" comments....

if I knew how to capture some of the windows as I go along...I would do that and post it...maybe someone out there could teach me how to do that...

anyway...here is what I do...(I am in full edit in PSE7)

when I get done editing my picture and I am satisfied with it, I save as so that "if" I need to come back to that point I can...cause sometimes I bugger up the border or something else and I wish to start over but I don't want to go back to the beginning. I can also do un-do if I haven't left the picture, but sometimes I just don't like the picture when I load it up so I start over.

Under "Image" drop down to Resize> Canvas Size you will see width and height...mine comes up in inches (now since I am using the "full size" of the picture, I stay in inches...but if I have sized it down then I change one of them to pixels (and they both (inches to pixels) change at that point)...I choose to do this in full size) ok...usually I tend to like a black border so I enter .30 Inches in both width and height (so it is equal on both sides of the picture, then I press ok, (have your picture at this point in the zoom mode as you can click on the fit screen so you can see how it looks all around). then I go back - Image > Resize > Canvas Size at this point I enter .04 into the width and height boxes, then I usually drop to other (at the bottom) I then choose a color from the picture that compliments the black and the picture itself. press ok. Now hit the fit screen again, so you can see what it is doing. Then I go back - Image > Resize > Canvas Size at this point I enter .50 into the width and height boxes, press ok. Now hit the fit screen for a final time. and that for me gives a nice balance of a border.

Now I go back into Image > Resize > Image Size, I pick the longest side and change that to 800 and depending on weather or not I want Bicubic Smoother or Bicubic Sharper...I pick one of those press ok, Now hit the fit screen.

then I go to File then Save for WEB choice. Here is where I go up and change the GIF to JPEG (high quality) then I go to the little round > button on the side. a little box appears once I click on that (it says optimize file size). that is where I enter the 300k. (I used to guess at this all day long trying to get the right size for a long time...this makes it soooooo much smoother.....)

there are a couple of other borders that are out there but be careful...the one that I have told you about is "basic editing safe" Dr. Confuser has a wonderful tutorial (with screens) on another border that I love but it is only legal in "advanced editing"

I hope this helps...please ask any questions about what I said...as I am sure I have left something out
