dpreview.com has a D5000 review that includes a direct comparison with the D90:

She would probably have the D90 longer than the D5000. Some reasons I can up with it:

1: If she buys a nikon flash (at the moment only the sb-900, though...) she will be able to trigger it via the popup flash on camera. Nikons "Creative Lighting System" is easy to use and gives a much more controlled and better light.

2: All AF lenses will autofocus. On the D5000 she would need to buy AF-S lenses.

3: The little LCD screen on top of the camera and more buttons makes the camere much more easier to use when once you put the program wheel to M, A, S or P.

Drawbacks on the D90 is that the screen won't svivel in all directions, which is a great feature if you use live view. I for one can't stand live view... The D90 is also getting old so there might be an upgrade within a few months.

i think d5000, sony's a500 and pentax k-x have same sensor. Having used k-x for more than a month now , d5000 should have pretty good image quality and should be on par with d90 if not beat it at higher isos (very likely to better d90 on dxomark in sensor rankings). DR of this sensor is very good. D90 is higher end camera so if possible your friend should buy d90 though. (Difference in image quality is very little).

thanks for everyone's thoughts.....
actually I am thinking she is seeing the D5000 as cheaper...and that is the motivation for her....

I personally love my D90!

Haven't used the D5000, my wife has the D3000 and I wish she had got the D90. It would have been a steep learning curve, but worth it. The D3000 works fine and does produce good images, but is limiting.

I would imagine the D5000 is no cheapo in quality, but I have never bought a camera based on price alone. All I can suggest is she does some research and looks at reviews before deciding. I understand that there are always financial constraints, but this is not a purchase to base on cost alone.

FWIW, planning to upgrade, and would much rather spend my hard-earned $$ on a D90 than a D5000.
