I bet we see a macro of a frog refracted through a water drop now lol

Oh if only I had a macro lens.
And a frog..
I Wonder if a hamster would be as popular?

(I do however have a kind friend with an extension tube! hehe).

FYI, I sent a "General Inquiry" with links to Macro Without Bugs or Flowers I & II. Hopefully Langdon can update the challenge name as he has done before.

so the idea is to get a macro of something that's "almost" a bug or flower but isn't?

No, the idea is to avoid the cliché by shooting something other than a bug or flower.

anyone here want to clarify what will be judged a "flower"? will a seed, seedpod, leaf, etc. be looked upon poorly?

Will there be a frog in the shot as well?

WOOT! I can think of much more fun things to macro-ize than bugs, frogs and flowers. What's the betting someone will submit a *shudder* spider macro? Though arachnids and not insects, to many they constitute a bug.

arthopods - (noun) classification of invertebrates (without a spine) with segmented bodies and jointed legs; includes spiders, insects, and crustaceans

Challenge description specifically excludes arthopods.

Take a macro shot (or at least an extreme close-up) of something that is not a bug or flower. (For the purpose of this challenge, "bug" refers to any insect, arachnid, worm, larvae, etc. that would be classified in the arthropoda phylum.)

Well mines in. I faced the classic problem of whether to chose the shot I liked the most, or the one I thought would attract the voters the most.

Why do I keep chosing my favourites?! ;o)

Mainly I just wanted to use my shiny new Sigma 180mm... job done.

Hey, I tried that once, back in 2004 (I like your take on it better).

This version of it gathered a Yellow Ribbon on it in 2004 -->

Geez, would I have nabbed the blue in '03 with this shot you think? lol

I think it's all part of the learning process here at DPC; to try these rather simplistic shots. Yes we see many water shots but they're almost never from the same person. Each person who tries a water shot or a straw shot, etc, learns something along the way and that's wonderful. These learned techniques are used in other setups and we go on from that experience. Seeing some members whine about seeing the same images over and over has gotten very annoying lately.

From that straw shot I learned something about placing filters on strobes. I wanted more contrast and less blow out in the straws so I used a dark grey filter on the strobe and it gave me what we see in the image. Lesson learned and I've used filters/gels ever since then.
Moral of the story, don't wipe your butt with poison ivy when you're out in the woods.

lol sorry, the Beaujolais is kicking in me thinks. ;]

First of all, I am not a fan of challenges that limit artistic freedom by excluding specific items. That said, I's rather have a photo of a beautiful flower, interesting bug with all it's minute details, cute frog, or even a spider than I would a photo of grains, straws, pencils, or some other item that I don't find interesting. We each have our own likes and dislikes in photography, why must we have challenges and conversations in favor of artistic freedom?
