ONE in 7 Billion - Take a Portrait in ANY style (straight/classic, candid, street, environmental etc.) that's a storyteller which shows the depth of someone different, special or interesting, a person that stands out (good or bad) in your part of the world. Dig deep and tell their story through an image.

I honor of CNN's 2008 Hero awards and the New York Times - ONE in 8 Million segment, This might be a great way to tell the story of somebody special in your community or general area...good or bad, through portraiture. I suggest good OR bad Or in the middle because everyone's got a story to tell.

Thoughts?

I just ran across this project on the Times site. Very cool. I really like the idea for the challenge as well. Similar to environmental portraits, but with much more flexibility and shooting freedom. Let's do it.

Superb challenge suggestion - how marvellous it would be to view and vote on too!

It definitely tells a large portion of his story, but there was so much to this guy. Very cool.

Steve a wile back you introduced Joe Ades to me among others. Your gentle nudge got me to read about the man, and also view images of the same, as of yet none capture a spirit as you did…

The real question is: Did you buy one of his vegetable peelers?

You got it! Now go get the picture. :-)

Those who only read the title of the challenge and not the description may well take a picture of the golden arches or one of its products... :-)

And what's wrong with normal people?? Why does it have to be someone "different"? (Just practicing for the usual whining and moaning that goes along with challenge topics!)

The people shooters should be happy. This, following on the heels of Candid VI...why back-to-back I wonder. ???

Oh well, should be an easy people shooting free study. :-) Like Eric said, a relaxed environmental portrait basically.

Shizzle! Now I'm in trouble...

This is going to be hard because it's too freakin cold to shoot. My UV Filter shattered yesterday when I took off my lenscap but I did get one shot before I ran home in cowardice...

Half of my characters are hiding indoors or stiffly bundled up when in view. I have my work cut out for me.

I think we had back to back to back macros just before this, so the non-macro folks are probably breathing a sigh of relief!

Finally a challenge that would fit the Mummers parade and I'm not going this year. Bummer. Steve, you're in NYC on New Year's Eve, you shouldn't have any problems getting a good shot!

I don't know. I spent a good deal of the morning trying to figure out who I can shoot where the image really...really tells a "back story". Something beyond a basic environmental portrait or a wrinkled face. I'm going to set my bar pretty high and hope I can come up with something substantial. I'm looking for a well rounded "storyteller".

Popcorn Sutton would have been perfect.

Sandy's shot really says so much about that lady, it's another great example.

Umm.. will the portrait, not portrait arguments spill over here as well.. I'm slightly worried about my entry being dnmc-ed now.
