Thanks to all of you veterans who have laid it out on the line for us all.
I am humbled by your dedication and service.

Here is 'my' veteran. Let's see yours.

I dont have any pics of my sister in her military outfit but here she is at her wedding. Both she and her husband serve in the Air Force. She served in Kuwait and Bharain during the Iraqi War.

Oldest son now serving in the Air Force.

Me on the left (20 years Air Force), Chad (6 year Marine), and Kyle (1.5 years Air Force), Luke is the little guy and not quite old enough to serve, he just had his first birthday.

Thanks to all Veterans.

Today I will go and put a new flag on my father's grave. 30 years Air Force.

eta - I found a pic of Chad in uniform.

That's me. 22 years US Army retired. My wife said "let your hair grow!" And thank you to all who serve now and in the past, both in the military and on the civilian side.

This was a challenge entry from my daughter, Eleanor pwncakesauce in honor of my Father-in-law, her grandfather, who was shot down three times over Germany flying bomber escort.

He escaped and got home all three times just to crawl back into a plane and do it all over again.

They don't make 'em like they used to.....

Many family members of mine have served, and died, in the armed forces of this country and for that I am proud, and deeply grateful.

The only thing impressive about my 11 years service is that miraculously it was all during peacetime...

My grandfather was a ground pounder for the allies at the Battle of the Bulge. My friends dad was there on D-Day. My cousin just returned from a tour with the Navy and my buddy is an Iraq war vet. These are the vets I'm thinking of today. Thank you for serving!

A shout out to my friend Cory (aka Fetor) who is hanging out in Afghanistan. Stop by his portfolio and leave a comment or two for him if you have the time. He doesn't get a chance to visit DPC too often - bandwidth sucks there - but he'll see new comments eventually. He's working on a series of photographs of women in war for a book. And let me tell you - don't know if it is his charm or what, but the US Marines have a LOT of gorgeous young women in the ranks!

Here are a couple of my dad:

-

I'd love to know more about his military service. We have his purple cross and old telegrams announcing when he was missing in action and when he was found. Unfortunately his records were destroyed in a big fire.

My Father

Citation:

Sgt. Bleak, a member of the medical company, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and indomitable courage above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. As a medical aidman, he volunteered to accompany a reconnaissance patrol committed to engage the enemy and capture a prisoner for interrogation. Forging up the rugged slope of the key terrain, the group was subjected to intense automatic weapons and small arms fire and suffered several casualties. After administering to the wounded, he continued to advance with the patrol. Nearing the military crest of the hill, while attempting to cross the fire-swept area to attend the wounded, he came under hostile fire from a small group of the enemy concealed in a trench. Entering the trench he closed with the enemy, killed 2 with bare hands and a third with his trench knife. Moving from the emplacement, he saw a concussion grenade fall in front of a companion and, quickly shifting his position, shielded the man from the impact of the blast. Later, while ministering to the wounded, he was struck by a hostile bullet but, despite the wound, he undertook to evacuate a wounded comrade. As he moved down the hill with his heavy burden, he was attacked by 2 enemy soldiers with fixed bayonets. Closing with the aggressors, he grabbed them and smacked their heads together, then carried his helpless comrade down the hill to safety. Sgt. Bleak's dauntless courage and intrepid actions reflect utmost credit upon himself and are in keeping with the honored traditions of the military service.[1]
