I have long been waiting to upgrade from my old Rebel XTi, and used to long for the 50D until I read up on the 7D today. The 7D seems to be packed with more than I could imagine in a camera, and would more than suit my needs for a long time.

However, I am the kind of person who does not mind saving up for longer and spending a little extra if it means I get the better model and won't want to upgrade for an even longer time. I have a handful of friends and opportunities that would allow me to be second shooter at a wedding, and I'd love to have a full frame camera for that, which the 5D mkII would be excellent for.

Again, however, I love some of the features the 7D offers which are not available on the 5D, mainly including the higher pixel density, the new AF modes, the 100% viewfinder, and the environmentally sealed body, as I take my camera backpacking often. Saving $1000 which I could spend on lenses is also nice.

I haven't been able to find any solid rumors on a 5D3, but it will probably be another year and a half until I can really have time to do what I want with photography when I graduate college. It's probably a good bet the 5D3 will have all the features of the current 7D which I like and more by the time it rolls around. Would it be worth waiting and saving up for, or will I not be able to notice enough of a difference between the cropped and full frame camera to warrant waiting? I could always go for the 7D now and sell it once the next 5D3 is unveiled.

read a lot of the tests to satisfy your mind!! but i'm very happy with my 7D and don't think that full frame would be a great advantage at this point especially for me as i don't do a lot of head shotd with that razor thin depth of field.

If you are happy with what you currently have for another year and a half then wait, there will be something released in that time that will be bigger, brighter, and better - the the way technology works.

I moved from a 350D to the 7D and love it. I'm sure the 5D2 would have been great as well but the price difference wasn't something I could justify.

Yes, but by then the 7D mkII will have some really unheard of cool features like built in Virtual Reality 3D mapping and a laser cannon. It's one big circle. You like the 7D now and you have the money? Buy it.

IMHO the 7D and 5DII are two totally different beasts, and are probably for two different markets. The only thing close between the two is the price. And honestly the 5DIII if it comes will be many moons away. If you need/want to upgrade do it with what is currently available. However don't expect too many other things in the 7D to hit the 5DIII until the 1DsIV hits the market and pushes the threshold even further, as the 5DII is currently hurting the 1DsIII market.

First of all, these two cameras are TOTALLY different. You should choose one that fits your needs. Do you shoot portrait? Do you shoot birds?

Secondly, a 5D mk3 will NOT come out for a while.. Look at how many years it took cannon to go from 5D to 5Dmk2

Hikari, have you made a decision yet?

Jeez... what's the point in waiting? Any new camera you get now will be better than the one you currently use. If you keep waiting for the 'best thing' you'll be waiting for eternity.

You could always go with Nikon D700 £1752 or the D300s for £1197

When the 7D was announced I wondered if maybe it would have been a better camera for me than the 5DMKII, so I had to work through that and get it out of my head. This is why I decided the 5D was better for me and maybe the points will help you in picking a direction.
- The 7D is faster, but I don't shoot sports or birds so the speed really isn't an issue.
- Even thought the 7D has 100% coverage in the view finder the 5D still presents a bigger viewfinder image because it's full frame This makes it easier for me to see what I'm shooting.
- I shoot a lot of available light and the 5D is still cleaner at high ISO
- I sell prints and having more pixels from the 5D opens up possibilities for larger prints and more $$.
- The 5D is supposed to get 24P video as a firmware upgrade in the spring, so that's not a deciding factor
- FF on the 5D gives me more options when working with DOF and this is something I cannot get with the 7D.

These points don't make the 5D a better camera, they just make it better for me. These same factors could apply exactly the opposite for somebody else, in which case they are still helpful.

There are a few other factors that may be a consideration for some. The 7D gives you wireless flash control, better AF and exposure metering, dual Digic IV processors (so it will handle video better than the 5D II regardless of firmware updates), better weathersealing, and it's $1000 cheaper (enough for an excellent lens or backup camera). However, the 5D II offers extended ISOs of 50 and 25,600 that aren't available on the 7D.

All very valid points...
- Wireless flash control alone can save the cost of a 580EX as a master, unless you have already bought into pocket wizards
- The 7D may "handle" video better, but if you are a film/video geek you may still want the greater DOF from FF. This is one element that is missing from a lot of video work.
- Better weather sealing... wish I had it
- $1000 cheaper.... really wish I had it
It's not an easy decisions and at one point I had even thought about trading for the 7D. Once again it really a matter of finding the better camera for ones needs rather than just picking the better camera.

5D3?... give them a chance to repair the problems with the 5D2 first :P

Joking aside. Depends on if you shoot more zoom or more wide really. You can by a 2X converter but I never seen a -2X widener but I have been wrong.

I 'prefer' full frame myself

I certainly hope that the extended ISO isn't the only thing the 5Dm2 has that the 7D doesn't and that the rest of the 5Dm2 is either on par or worse than the 7D. If not I feel like I've been seriously ripped off. Additionally, Canon would have shot themselves in the foot not being able to anymore sell a camera that is still relatively new. And the pricing would be totally wrong.
However... I never owned the 7D so I can't comment on any of the practical differences. But Canon has no doubt created a hot item (with the 7D) that sells well and you would definitely get a lot for the money.
