I know a lot of us have noticed this and I feel that it's getting worse. I am going to encourage all voters to lighten up a bit. I am especially talking about the so called "hard core" wave at the beginning. If you score under 4, you ought to leave a comment on why.
I honestly don't know why so many do this, it's not like helps you or anyone else. Maybe you submitted a photo and hope to bring everyone else's down and hope everyone gives you a higher score.
I am going to start voting 7-9s for the okay ones and 10's for good ones, under 5 for DNMC. Hoping it will help counter some of the trolls.

So who's with me?

So many people do that already. Look at the number of 4s vs 1,2,3...people essentially use 4 as "1" because they don't want to leave a comment. I personally think the voting scale should be dropped down from 1-10 to 1-5, which would cause more "honest" voting. Most people it seems only use a 4-10 or 5-10 scale anyway.

I personally only use a 5 and higher. Every once in a while I will go under a 5 depending on the photo, but try to leave a comment on every photo I vote on...not always though.

I have stopped entering challenges because I never get any comments, very few at the most, and low scores with no explanation.

I use a 1-10 and feel no guilt about doing so. I could probably count the number of votes of 1 that I have ever given on one hand, but I am likely to vote a good half dozen at 3 or less on any given challenge, and plenty of 4s. Sometimes I leave a comment, and sometimes I don't - depends on how much time I have, and whether I feel like leaving one. Quite frankly, I suspect the comments aren't really much appreciated any way. That said, if someone posts a 'what could I have done different' thread I am more likely to leave a detailed comment.

How does a vote of 4 or lower "not help anyone else?" If that's what their photo deserves, that's what it should get. How would voting them higher help them? Personally, I use the full range - and 1-4 are numbers on that range. And yes, some entries are just that poor.

I think folks need to grow a thicker skin. Low votes will happen on any photo - even ribbon winners. If you can't overlook getting a few low votes, then you're probably one of those that needs a thicker skin. If you can't handle getting a final vote of 4 or lower...you need to work to improve your skills.

And as far as leaving comments on low votes, stop and consider that a moment - if you vote a 2 because a photo is really that bad, where do you even start with the comments? Nobody has time to leave a full dissertation on how to be a better photographer. So do you just pick one problem area and tell them to work on that? That won't fix all of their problems, just one - is that "helpful" then?

In the end, I think it'd be better if everyone simply voted their own way within the bounds of the rules, and minded their own business to let others do the same.

I can think of at least 5 separate occasions where my "low" average vote cast has been used to discount my opinions on here.

Everyone has different criteria. To me a 4 says "a good effort that shows you tried, but still lacking in some major way". For others, a 4 is the default "nothing wrong here, but not grabbing me either" vote. It's alway interesting to see a a high vote followed by a low one. I always wonder what these voters perceived that led to one loving it and the other thinking it sucks.

Most entries deserve neither a 1 or a 10, but almost everyone gets a few of both. My theory is that those extreme votes are used by some as either a punishment or a reward.

Examples:
"Sheesh! Another freaking flower! Can't you try something original? 1."
"Love this moody shadowy blur. Very creative and different, but I don't think it will be appreciated by the masses. 10."

I like the current voting system, and would not want it changed.

However, it would be interesting if the voting only gave two options:

1) I like it!
2) I don't like it!

And the winner is the one with the highest proportion of 'I like it'.

I vote exactly this way (with the exception of comments). I have once again stopped entering challenges(I have been with the site since 2004) recently because of bogus voting and poor handling of certain situations by Site Council.

I am thinking about entering the Halloween challenge.

But I can certainly appreciate your issues with the voting here...
