I think the challenge is expecting us to use artificial light as the main light source for the subject and NOT necessary that the light source has to be a part of the image or the subject itself. But, I already got 2 out of 5 comments mentioning that the light source is not shown in the image. Am I missing something here? Anybody got a similar comment?
Challenge description: "Create a photo that uses artificial lighting as its subject(s) main light source. Try and make it evident that it is artificial".

| I'm getting this comments too, I think that some people misread the challenge details and are misjudging some entries. |

It's a tricky one because I've had the opposite said about mine - that I should not have had the light source shown!
But the key is the last sentance of the challenge desciption: "Try and make it evident that it is artificial".
I.e. provide evidence that the shot has been achieved by artifical lighting. Clearly some shots (including mine) have obviously used artificial lighting and so there may not be a need to show the light source.
However, a couple of photos spring to mind where no source was shown and it would be possible to achieve a similar result through natural light and post-processing. In such cases where it is not obvious and there is some ambiguity, you should expect some different interpretations when it comes to scoring.
I've noticed that there seem to be two perspectives to scoring. One is challenge focused where first and foremost the scorer is looking for relevance to the challenge - i.e. is 'artificial light' one of the key words you'd associate with the photo? While the other is primarily focused on the quality of the photo and not ncessarily in the context of the challenge - i.e. is this a good photo in its own right? I find myself torn between the two and so I will generally reserve the 9 and 10s for those photos that fulfill both criteria. |

IMHO, that is what the challenge is all about. Your photograph should be taken in such a way that the use of artificial light is evident and the image speaks for itself without that ambiguity. This need not be done by including the light source.
On the other hand, there are cases where the light source needs to be a part of the image, which is different.
So, whether the light source is a part of the image or not, the use of artificial light as the source should be evident and recognizable in the resultant image. Any thoughts? |
