I was just asked to give a quote for a photography assignment. I normally charge a flat rate fee of $250 (not including prints), but I've never had someone ask for full rights to the photographs. I graduated in May with a photography degree so I'm kinda new to the whole business side of photography, so I have no idea how to price it. Advice please???
The description for the job was:
"-Photography -- You are a very talented photographer. Since they focuses on golf courses, my thought is that you could do a photo shoot at a golf course where the beautiful pictures could be used on their website and in their literature. You would need to quote on one day of a photo shoot -- and they would have all rights to the photography."

You'll find the general concensus here is to *NEVER* give up your rights to images.
Here's the facts.
If you do that, make sure you get the money for them, 'cause it's once & done!

| My advice is don't take a job that requires giving up the rights to your photography. If you want to price giving them the rights you would only want to give them conditional use rights. Keep in mind if they have full rights they could use the photographs for their marketing on a billboard, in 5000 handouts, on their website, or they could even sell it to a stock site and continue to make money off of it. My advice would be to either educate them so that they understand they are actually looking for conditional usage rights or run away from them. |

| With the two people's advice given and a lot of thinking about it I told the woman I wasn't willing to give up all rights... and I never heard back from the woman about the job. So, I talked to my boss (who does shoots for Paula Deen, etc... don't know why I didn't ask her advice in the first place) and she said just to add 100% onto total cost if the company is only local, and 200%-300% if it's a national company, and so on. Apparently in the photography business people get these kind of jobs all the time (ones where they ask for all rights), so not doing those types of jobs limits a photographer to the types of commercial jobs they can get. Just thought people might want to know how to price it if the question ever comes up on the forum again. Thanks for the post though! |

And God only knows what those golf course photos will be worth in the future.
Sounds like  missingstar's boss gave her good advice. I am always baffled why people here think the way they do about giving up rights to these types of commissioned projects. |

Agreed. I certainly don't know of any famous (or even any slightly well-known) photographer whose fame or fortune arose from golf course shots. |

This is the only one who I know of. Lots of her work is from the Pebble Beach area. I don't know if her skills have brought her fame and fortune though. :) //www.joanndost.com/

I agree that there are a few exceptionally scenic golf courses which could possibly lead a photographer to fame and fortune -- in addition to Pebble Beach, the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island comes to mind -- but I suspect the invitation was not for one of these. And yes, success at real golf shots would be a much more certain track to fame and fortune. |

You are right. The only reason I know of Dost is from drooling over her pictures of Cypress and Pebble. |
