Im actually going to make an effort to get an entry in for this, as i've had a shot in my head for quite some time now. Just gotta see if I can execute it properly, as well as deal with all of the nonsense related to getting married next week!

Just the thing for learning how to use my strobes, now that I have some. Maybe the wireless triggers will arrive this week.

I might try this, not sure though as have never really done anything Low Key or even tried it. My picture will probably scream INEPT!! but its a new technique that I shouldnt be scared of I guess.

Like you Starbanana, I've never tried to do anything like this so it will be a nice challenge. Hopefully we'll get some good feedback on what we submit.

I couldn't get the concept of low key really well.
09/30/2009 11:09:30 AM · #9
Low key is often mistaken for high contrast, with many shadows and many highlights, but it is NOT. Lower the lights and play around. I love low key!!!

Here are some examples from google. Not all are low key enough for me but you get the idea. Low Key Images

on of my favorite low key shots...
09/30/2009 11:12:19 AM · #11
Think of it this way...just reverse the use of shadow and light...usually light dominates while shadow accessorizes, but in this case, try it hte other way around. Try and let the shadow tell the story, with the light being the supporting element.

A good way to get ideas is to just google image serach Film Noir or Low Key Images of course.

Haha, I like that Jutilda said one thing, and then I went and said the exact opposite. I hvae a feeling that will be the recurring theme in this challenge...is it low key or just contrasty?

Black and other dark objects are easier to shoot for this challenge?
It seems to be a good challenge for portraits too.

Cheers for that, really helpful.
I have had an idea for an image for ages which I think might actually be low key, havent followed through on my idea as its a difficult one but think I will now. Fingers crossed I a, have the right idea & b, get lots of feedback on it either way.

so low key does not mean no highlights ?

From googling it very few low key seem to be mostly black, just lots of it and the highlights are quite pronounced

To me the key is set by the background as much the subject itself. As Judy pointed out, it's not just a high contrast thing.

When voting, if the photo is overall "dark", I will consider it close enough for low sky to meet the challenge, regardless of highlights.

I sure wish we had a high key challenge to go along with this one.

I've never tried this type of photography but I have something in mind. I tried last night but just can't seem to get the right lighting. I'll have to try again tonight.

Is someone going to change the name of the challenge to Low Key III?

I would accept this as low key.

I notice that B&W seems to be very popular for this style re the previous challenge results.
From my portfolio, this one is the one that I would pick for this challenge. I like B&W but I love color.

I'd say so. You could also take a photo of a small donkey...
