My sister is taking photography in school, and she needs help with a few questions. Any help you guys can give is much appreciated. The questions she needs answered are:

1. What metalic substance is the active ingredient in most b/w film? i thought it was silver, is that correct?
2. list some other chemicals & substances in the emulsion
3. There are multiple layers of chemicals & compounds in b/w film. create a cross section diagram of film and label at least 4 important layers and give 1 or 2 facts about each.

can someone direct her to a general film photography fact site, where she can find all this information? Thanks in advance.

Why would you ask those questions here? This place is for digital photography only.

We're still photographers, and a lot of us come from a film background.

If my kid signed up for a photography class and they mentioned film that would be the last day of class.

Funny Niten, I just graduated with a degree in commercial photography two years ago, am only 25 and LOVE anything technology related, but if I had a kid who was taking a photography class that never dealt with film, THAT would be their last day of photography class.

Sure I might have overstated that but my point is that it seems all photography classes are either old school, teaching developing or photoshop classes. There is a lot more to it.

1. Sliver Halides
2. "Gelatin" which is the material that suspends the silver halides. The silver halide is the active ingredient in the emulsuion. The silver halide is typically made up of silver bromide and silver iodide.
3. The four layers are typically:

(from bottom to top)
Base - provides rigidity
Adhesive layer - allows emulsion to stick to the base
Emulsion - suspension of silver halides where latent image is formed
Protective layer - protects the emulsion and makes the film hand holdable.

PS - if she's taking a class, she should have a textbook with this material in it. This is purely basic groundwork information.
