I'm facebook friends with this guy Jimmy from Gideon Photo in St George Utah and he keeps posting these amazingly crisp and colorful photos from engagement session, weddings, etc.

Can someone take a look at this photo Here and help me figure out how he is editing the shots? Is this simply sharpening and saturation mods? I'm desperate to find out! It's driving me crazy!

Why don't you ask him directly if he is your friend?

The guy's face looks like it's been tweaked a bit. I'd say most of the appearance is a good lens and good lighting. I'm not sure if that is shot outdoors with fill light, or if it's a studio shot.

He's just the busy type.

To be honest, though, I have seen better stuff from many of the pros that hang out here. Still way better than I could produce, but I'm not a pro.

Come on Dusty, are you really Gideon Photo in St George Utah? Recently joined, only one post.

Gideon Photo is Jimmy Bishop based in Utah.

I'm Dusty Knapp. I live in Southern California.

As you can see, no I'm not from Gideon Photo. Also, why would I attempt to make you guess my own editing process? You think I'm advertising photography services to other photographers?

Um I charge 61 million for my filter packs, not 51 million.
And really? I'm here to sell filter packs? Come on, give me a break. I'm here to participate in the challenges and the forums to better myself. I'll be filling out my profile shortly.

The only reason I gave Gideon Photo some promotion was because I felt it would be wrong to post his image without credit.

That's one of the many reasons everyone at DPC is on my Enemies List. Don't worry, Dusty, I'll buy your filters. ;-)

If that is the case, you have my apologies, and I look forward to seeing your entries shortly. Please understand how your post was perceived. We have recently seen a lot of spam postings disguised as forum questions, usually from brand new members with no other activity, so many of us are sensitive to how such things come off. I just noticed you have a blue shirt. A spam poster would be unlikely to pay the member fee to post such things.

You seem to get in trouble just fine on your own.

I'm going to go out on a limb and try to answer his question. :P

Once in awhile you can produce this crispness just from raw files. bump the contrast, the structure, the vibrancy, pull colors a little bit and viola!

If anyone knows of a filter or program to reproduce it past this, I'd love to know as well.

Whoops! Sorry Dusty that I mistook your first post.

Welcome aboard and we look forward to more of your photos if this is the caliber you will be continuing on with.

Welcome!

I would guess that the critical element of the shot you linked was the use of a good lens at a wider aperture for a very shallow depth of field--note the foliage on the left--very shallow dof. This really separates the subjects from everything around them, and when everything around them is out of focus, it makes their focus seem all the crisper. If he is a nikon guy, bet he uses the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 zooms, and maybe also the 85mm 1.4. Check with him and see. If he is a Canon guy, well, maybe he just got lucky? :-))

I agree with above comments. The majority of good wedding photography is shallow DOF and good control of lighting. Shooting wide open on good glass (and for your camera set up that would be Canon L glass) allows you to control the focal point on the subjects and the background blends together in nice bokeh. From a processing side, my guess is he used Lightroom and did mostly global adjustments to refine colors, etc.
