Well, I was fortunate enough to win a Red Ribbon and now I'm trying to send in my files for validation. I've sent the .DNG files that I have, but was told that they won't work. It has to be the .CR2 file. When I originally imported the images into Bridge CS4, I selected the "Convert to .DNG" option at the advice of Scott Kelby's CS4 book. Does anyone have any idea how to get the file BACK to a .CR2 file? I have long ago formatted that card that had the captures. I guess I'm going to be out my ribbon because I don't think that there is any way to do this. Oh well.

I don't know how to convert back, but I doubt it would count as the "unedited original" in any case. I think for validation they need the out of camera file. So if you don't have the original CR2 files backed up somewhere, might be out of luck.

FWIW, I dump all my images off the card twice--once to an external HD straight from the card, and these never get touched. I then copy the files from the card to another drive, and import them from there into (in my case) Aperture. When I have the files on two different drives, then I format the memory card. I know it is a Horse and Barn Door kinda post now, but independent of challenge validations, it also gives you recourse to your original files in case of HD crashes, etc.

And, on those rare occasions where I have received a validation request, I go to the untouched photo files, knowing that they were never touched by any editing program at all.

When you created the DNG did you choose to embed the raw file? If so, you could probably extract it.

If you cannot locate the CR2 file on your computer you might be able to retrieve them from you memory card with a recovery program. It depends on whether or not you have used the card again since erasing the photos from the card but it might be worth a try.

If you have used the card again but did not fill it up completely then the old erased ones which were not over-written by new images may still be recoverable. Good luck!
