I'm relatively new to ebay having sold only a few items in the last couple months.
Yesterday I put up a rather large (Price wise) item up for bid. It's a HD camera with 8 lenses. The buy me now price was 4000USD.
After a day online someone hit the buy me now button and took the whole thing. I received an email right after that said
Just bought your item on eBay and I'm ready to immediately... Hope PayPal if OK and does you email account link with eBay?
Get back to me ASAP
Thanks

I saw that his/her profile was created just that day with no items bid on or sold ever. This got me worried but I sent an invoice.

The next message came through as such:

Dear ebay seller,

The buyers account was linked to an address in the U.S. I've noticed many sellers on ebay only ship TO their own country (I thought this was simply a shipping issue). And with so many scams going on from Africa via internet I'm now not sure what to do about this. No payment has been made, but if the payment is made is there anything that would prevent me from getting the money (It's in my paypal...what would happen?)

Should I state that I can only send email to addresses linked to the persons account? Is this something that people have seen before?

Thanks in advance!

It is a scam, run in the other direction.

Yep, major scam. ANY time a buyer asks you to ship to an address - especially to a country - other than the one initially indicated, it's bad news.

I'd report it to eBay right away.

Did you say in your listing you would ship it to outside the US???????????? If not, then say no... Don't even get involved with this....... Sounds like a scam to me... Just tell the person, thank you for buying my ebay item, but that you don't have the necessary means to ship items outside the US so you will be sending the item directly to them.. Wait to get the money in your paypal acct....

I only ship to registered Paypall addresses. I agree something sounds a bit fishy here..

I'd actually advise against this - taking their money and shipping the item to them could result in trouble for you... When this happened to me a while back, I immediately refunded their money through PayPal and told them I would not be shipping at all, better luck elsewhere. My philosophy was, better not to get involved at all - the last thing you want is them on the other end claiming they never got the item and raising hell. Even with postal insurance and tracking, it could cause a real hassle for you.

This person has already lied and tried to cheat you - why send them anything and give them a chance to do worse harm?

To build on this, everything I sell now has "Buyer Requirements." There's an option for that when you're listing items for sale, it comes just below the shipping option setup, I think.

I check off almost all of the requirement options, but most especially the ones that refuse users without a PayPal account, and refuse users registered in a country that I don't ship to. And because I'm a paranoid jerk, I also refuse people with low feedback and unpaid item strikes against them :-)

I did a search and found that this person has copy and pasted the same message to others. Damn...I was hoping this was for real. I was already making plans as how to spend the money.

Glad you found that quickly! Definitely report it to eBay as soon as possible and don't send any more e-mails to the scammer. Nigeria seems to be a popular location for scammers.

If you are even thinking about sending this to the "winner" I have a better suggestion. Put all the equipment in a canvas bag...take a hammer....smash all items until none bigger than a dime.

At least this way you'll have "something" left.

LOL...of course it is a scam but I think you know that ! ;-)

Why is everyone down on Nigeria? Just look at some of the courses offered by the University of Nigeria. Seems legit to me.

If you have a bad feeling about a transaction then go with your gut feeling. I would caution you not to provide personal information as he may be setting you up for identity theft or maybe something worse. Contact Ebay and ask them to contact him.
Just my humble opinion.

Nigeria is cool:

"Your PhotoShop class was the best help I ever received. Not only am I now able to amuse myself with multiple identities, but no one can find me now! I ran away from my spend-thrift wife, cut off the alimony payments to the kids, hehehe... even the utility services can't find me. University of Nigeria helped me save thousands upon thousands of dollars. Thank you for improving my life and providing me with the economic freedom I have been searching for." --- One of many moving testimonials on the U of N site.

Usually a "certified check" is the primary method of scamming. Your bank will have "cleared the check" and everything seems fine until 2 weeks later when it bounces...

I have never heard of anyone scamming with PayPal though. Although it sounds like I scam, I would be more likely to trust PayPal - just make sure to never click on a link through an email that confirms payment. I would go to PayPal's webpage and log in there to check the payment status.

To be honest, a lot of foreign transactions take place through ebay because it can be hard to find cheap goods in other countries (Nigeria). I wouldn't condone it as a fake just yet... however, that Air Force Base line makes me wonder a little if that is just thrown in there. Make sure to use a carrier where you have a tracking number and the person has to sign for the package. It costs more but is worth it.

Best of luck to you. If it worries you too much, don't think twice about re-posting the item. It is your goods and this is your transaction - you've got the most to lose.

I have had this happen to me years ago and when I was selling watches. Have him pay you and then as soon as he does report him to paypal. What they do is steal someone's credit card information and use that to pay you. After a few days the person will report the stolen money and hopefully catch these assholes.

Don't do it and precify in future listings that you only ship to your own country and that you only ship to paypal approved addresses.

It is a Scam, Report this to Ebay and Paypal. We have had the same thing happen to us on Ebay a couple of times. Might even be from the same person because the wording is very simular right down to the purchasing it for a church and calculating the shipping for us.
