Need help with the math here, folks. I can never achieve a 5.8000 average (I have been trying all year!) so I've decided I need to set my sights in the other direction - I need to get my average from the current 5.7469 to 5.7000. I currently have 295 challenges. What do I need to average over the next 50 or so to get my average down to 5.7000?

Bear in mind I will not be trying to score low - I can do that just fine without making the effort to do so on purpose!

That's the wierdest thing I have ever heard on here.

If you averaged a 6.1 in the next 50 Challenges your average would be a 5.7971..which would be close to 5.8....so I suppose if you averaged 5.4...in the next 50... your average would drop to 5.6956..

5.4233
Why on earth would you want to do that?

Well, yes, I am weird.

I guess the point is I have a much better chance at setting a goal to lowering my average and then achieving it than vice versa. For instance, I did the math. To have an average of 5.7000 after the next 50 challenges, I'd have to average 5.4233 for those challenges. Not really as easy as it looks, mind you! To average 5.8000 (which was my goal earlier in the year) I'd have to score an average of 6.1133 for the next 50 challenges, which is impossible.

So yes, I'm weird. Carry on!

Blurry stuff tends to score low. You could do your usual stuff, and then ocassionally do a tactical lowball entry. Blurry and grainy tends to help that. Be careful with the blurry and grainy though, it could be seen as brilliantly artistic if you are not careful. And no pigeons. If you enter a pigeon, people will assume it is yours and go easier.

You could pick a recurring gag shot theme that does not go over well with the masses. Shoehorns and motorhomes come to mind, but you'll have to find your own recurring gag.

NNNNNoooooo. Don't do it! I mean if it happens and you go lower. fine. but come on, you can get up to 5.8! I know it. I'm up here at 5.8, holding my hand out..... just a little closer and I'll pull you in. Don't set a goal to lower yourself, in any way. You're too cool for that.

I think my point was (and yes, there kinda was a point) that those who HAVE averages of 5.8, 5.9, 6.0+ really have to maintain a VERY high average in challenge scores. It's VERY hard to move up beyond a certain point. It's a whole lot easier to move down. So when you see folks who have seemingly impossible 6.3 or 6.4 AVERAGE vote received, you realize they score higher on every challenge than most of us do for our highest scoring challenges.

All of this because I've had a nasty headache all day today that just won't go away. And I don't have any cigarettes. Bah.

And thanks, Crystal, but I do not think I'll ever see 5.8 as an average. I would like to try to keep the 5.7xxx but I certainly wouldn't bet my house on it either. :-)

The numbers are arbitrary anyways- shoot what pleases you- not what you think will please everybody here. You have enough experience under your belt(- 295 challenges!) by now to not worry about that. As you see, since you have entered so many, it is very hard to significantly change that average anyways.

Your problem is that you have too many challenges entered. So there's very little fluctuation. I don't have that many challenges, so I'm still seeing big swings in my average. which is why I was moaning and groaning about all my recent 5.2s :D

LOL! You flew right past me, Wendy - didn't even wave as you went by! :-)

actually, it's not as bad as you think. You don't have to average 6.1 over 50 challenges. Just average 7.5 over about 35 challenges :D

(actually, I wish they would break down the average vote received by year. I think your 2008 and 2009 would be even more impressive. I would be nice to see details broken down in smaller chunks. I'd love to look at progress month to month--or be able to cleanly download the numbers to crunch them myself.)

Coffee might fix that headache.. if you drink caffeine on a regular basis and haven't had any today.. it can bring on a headache.

Ah, were it only so easy! I've suffered from chronic headaches for over 20 years. I have a number of things I try - one of which is caffeine and ibuprofen, which sometimes helps because I don't normally have caffeine. I used to try a cigarette or thirty, but I quit smoking so that's out. I've often thought of trying a baseball bat, but I don't happen to have one handy. And sadly the drill I do have is 110V only, and I currently live in a 220V world.

Usually I just wait them out. It'll go away eventually.

220V is VERY effective for ending various pains...

But not for running your 110V drill....

There is, however, a very handy cigarette machine just down the road....

Exactly!! I've often thought that would feel SO good! (Or at least better!)

Well, instead of self disqualifying to avoid low scores, self disqualifying on higher scores would be a start. ;-)

If your luck is like mine, you now have no chance of a low score in a challenge....

Usually when I decide to really buckle down and get serious on a challenge, it becomes one of my lowest scores ever. One of my best received images here, ever, was one that I opened the front door and fired the shutter just to make sure the camera I just bought worked.

PS: I wanting a 5.7 average too... Only that would be a drastic improvement for me.

Deb, as far as the cigs leave them at the store, best place for them. If you want to drop your score hell, just ask my advice on possible entries, out of my last 10 entered only 3 made it out of the 4's..

I've had chronic headaches since I was 18 (which was a long time ago...) I finally broke down and tried a mouth guard. I still have the headaches, but they seem to be less frequent and less severe.

LOL - With some 300 challenges now, I have been lusting after a 5.50 average for years. (we all have our aspirations) Whenever I get within hollering range, I seem to produce a long list of alleged stinkers and back down the average slides.

Goals are there to be admired, not achieved, imo.

Meanwhile, Melitha, if you are even thinking of wavering on the cigarette front, go find that baseball bat and hit yourself in the foot so you can't make it to the store. You are, I think, almost finished with the cigarette craving, aren't you?

You can select your challenge stats with the mouse and paste them on excel...

When I paste them into excel, it doesn't separate them into columns. It also doesn't have anything delimited the information, and the challenge names aren't fixed length, so I haven't found a way to split out the information.
