so i have been planning to leave this lame job for awhile, various OS trips planned and pretty much just had a gutful of working in a depressing office job. then tonight i am stuck on a late shift and while running out to our warehouse i stop dead in the middle of the road, awestruck at the sight of whats possible the most amazing sunset iv ever seen, atleast in my own city.
i know sunsets happen all the time but this was truely special, and the fact i was stuck at work and couldnt have been anywhere remotely nice to even see it properly let alone capture it REALLY breaks my heart.

Since getting into photography i find that i notice the amazing things in our world so much more, and it has made me so much more determined to see as much of our world as i possible can, tonight just goes to show that truely beautiful things can happen anytime, anywhere.

so literally the moment i walked back into work i dragged my boss into his office and quit then and there :) i still missed tonights amazing sunset but i certainly dont plan on repeating it. HOLIDAYS TIME!

ok thats all i had to say, sorry just had to share my experience, i dont have a point... ;)

Congratulations on your freedom!

I was thinking this exact same thing yesterday after a drive out to pick up some "lunch" at 8pm. As I was winding back over the speed bumps at work I couldn't help but notice how amazing the air felt and how beautiful the clouds were that were building in the mountains. I have to drive over 3 sets of these speed bumps and after each one I felt the world close in around me more and more. I said to myself "I've got to get out of this job and doing what I want to in life." I feel like so much of my life is wasted at "work". Sigh... one of these days...

Good for you! Obviously you were unhappy in your job, the timing was right and the sunset the icing on the cake as it were.

And yes, the more you shoot, the more you notice things begging to be shot all around you. Here's a kinda sorta version of your story:

A few months ago I went on a first date with someone who was just getting started in modelling who was amazingly photogenic but had, frankly, already turned me off a few minutes in, because he insisted on having his celphone sitting on the table between us. So I just ordered a plate of appetizers and called it a day. As we were walking outside to our respective cars I noticed some spectacular light in the sky and pointed it out to him. The look of blank confusion/annoyance on his face was worth a shot in itself!

Needless to say, as Mr Ridiculously Photogenic got in his oversize SUV (guess he needed it to pack his ego around in), celphone plastered to his ear, I decided that that was also our last date!

I always looked at thing like this as a reward for doing things that I didn't want to do. When I would leave work and see something spectacular, I'd think that perhaps I would have been inside at home, and I might not have seen it at all!

But anyway, you're young and this is the time to do things and experiment. My husband and I used to go places and explore on the weekends, but now with two kids we have baseball games, cub scouts, archery, etc. Wouldn't trade it for the world, but I'm glad that we had our adventures when we were young!

This is usually where I chip in with some smart comment or `put down`, but I really have to admire your balls (not literally) and its a pretty inspirational kind of thing you have done. Go enjoy yourself!

It's good for the soul to quit a toxic job. :-)

I remember doing the same thing 22 years ago. I worked in Stockbroking as a share clerk and the manager of the department always gave me a hard time. At one point during the boom, I was working 16 hours every day, 7 days a week and that went on for 3 months.

He would stand behind me while I was working and insult me blind in front of everyone. My work was always spot on, which was allocating shares between buyers and sellers. In those days, there wasn't the harrasment laws that there are now.

One day, I decided I was tired of his abuse, so I typed up my resignation and literally threw it in his face.

My colleagues gave me a fairwell lunch, got me incredibly drunk and put me in a cab home. I even had an old cabcharge voucher (Company pays) in my wallet which I used to get home. (We were always given cabcharge vouchers when we worked late)

I then went on a trip around Australia. I was 18 years old at the time.

The manager several months later was admitted into a Psychiatric hospital. His problems obviously became too much for him and he had lost the person with whom he vented his hurt on.
