The Yankees will only be playing if they make the playoffs. And if they make it? Good luck getting tickets. The Rangers should be easy to get tickets for that far in advance.
The Empire State building is fairly expensive to see but worth doing once. I probably won't ever go again because its expensive and the lineup is stupid. (Plan for about 2-3 hours for the whole thing). Really take time to explore Central Park. I didn't and that's the one place I'll be visiting if I ever get to go back.

FAO Schwarz is also really cool. Its right by Apples Flagship store which is apparently quite interesting.

You'll notice that all of these things (except for the Yankees) are in Manhattan. That's because even limiting yourself to Manhattan you won't see everything you want in a week.

Make sure you get a multi day transit pass. The subway can take you everywhere that your feet won't. Just be prepared to walk though

eta: You can also try to get tickets for shows like The Late Show and The Daily Show. Seeing a Broadway show is incredible too btw.

My partner and I are going from Sept 27 to Oct 3, it will be our first time there. I've already got tickets to a Broadway show bought (The Lion King) and a friend got us tickets to see a taping of the Letterman Show (can't wait!!!). I've got a list of things I want to see (it may seem like a lot but we can pack a lot into a day....we saw almost everything there was to see in London in a week, LOL):

-Empire State Building
-Rockefeller Center & Radio City Music Hall
-Carnegie Hall
-Grand Central Station
-NYC Public Library
-St. Patrick's Church
-Macy's
-FAO Schwartz
-Apple Store
-Madison Sqaure Gardens
-Restaurant from Seinfeld show
-MOMA
-Guggenheim
-Times Square
-Central Park
-Museum of Natural History
-Statue of Liberty
-Ellis Island
-Staten Island Ferry
-United Nations

It seems like a lot of different places, but that iternary is completely doable in a weeks time because the marjority of the places you listed are within walking distance of each other. I live on 32nd and 5th (across the street from the Empire state building.) If have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.

Yes, my sister-in-law did this last year. Only thing is you have to choose from shows that have seats left, so if there's a particular show you want to see it's best to buy tickets in advance (and remember tickets are non-refundable).

Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and into DUMBO, pick up a bottle of wine, and watch the sunset on the water at this park:

You'll have 2 bridges to take photos of and it just a great, relaxing time. Also within reach from here is the walking pier in Brooklyn Heights which provides great pano-views of lower Manhattan. Again, a blanket and a bottle of wine will make for a great rest/break.

Definitely explore central park, I would say walk all around but you don't necessarily need to go north of the reservoir.

Empire State Building has great nostalgia but the view from 30 rock is better IMO b/c you can see the ESB & Central park and the ESB provides a great compositional element for sunset shots. Both are more expensive than they should be.

Bring a tripod if you go to Times Square, so you have the option of blurring out all the busy-ness you will encounter.

You'll find good food and plenty to look at where ever you roam. Try wandering some neighborhoods (East & West Village, SoHo, Upper West Side). You could spend a half day at least in any of the museums; my favorites are MOMA and The Metropolitan (check out the Temple of Dendur (sp?)). The Museum of Natural History is old and full of school kids but has some cool dinosaur bones. Times Square is a tourist dump and often packed, but hard to avoid. Don\'t miss Grand Central's ceiling or St. Patrick's architecture.

Here's a rough re-working of that list, by neighborhood, with a few additions and subtractions. Like Five_Seat said, things tend to be next to near each other (e.g., Central Park borders The Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Natural History).

34th St
-Empire State Building
-Macy's
-B&H (closed Saturdays)

Midtown/42nd St.:
-Grand Central Station
-NYC Public Library
-Times Square/Broadway Theater District

Midtown / 5th Avenue
-St. Patrick's Church
-Rockefeller Center & Shops (check out murals inside, too)
-Radio City Music Hall
-MOMA

Central Park:
-Bethesda fountain and plaza, Delacorte Clock (by zoo), Conservatory Water (model sailboat pond) and Alice in Wonderland statue, etc.

Upper East:
-Metropolitan Museum of Art
-Guggenheim

Upper West Side:
-Museum of Natural History
-Lincoln Center (opera/dance/etc.)

Way Upper West:
-Cathedral of St. John the Divine (huge!)

Downtown:
-SoHo District, Little Italy, Greenwich Village

Southern end:
-Statue of Liberty
-Staten Island Ferry
-Ellis Island

-Wall Street/Trinity Church
-South Street Seaport
-Brooklyn Bridge

Karen

Postpone your trip by two weeks so i don't have to drag my wife on 1000 different photo trips. LOL LOL LOL

WESTCOAST vs EASTCOAST of Canada. In a photo duel in NY. We couldn't get any further apart in Canada.

Oh BTW NFLD was our second choice. We have always wanted to go there but ther AIRFARE was insane. I've heard the nightlife is off the charts.

Haha, tickets are bought, no postponing it now!

I agree airfare to/in Nfld is crazy, that's why we don't travel any more than we do. If it's not for business we can only manage to get off the island once a year. I'm not really into the nightlife but George Street is THE place to go in St. John's for partying.

If I were you I'd skip going to the top of the Empire State Building and go to "Top of the Rock" instead ... the lines are terribly long to get to the top of the ES building and when you're on top of it you can't see it ... from the Top of the Rock you get an amazing view of the ES building ... just my $.02 worth ...

If I'm in the States, count me in. I'm overseas for the fall, but I should be there from Sep through most of Dec the next couple years.
