Many people have had good luck with B&H (//www.bhphotovideo.com) including myself.

B&H is fantastic. Also very good are 17th Street Photo and Adorama. I'd rank them in exactly that order. I've done business with all three, and would do business with any of them again.

I bought two Canon L lenses from B&H, fast shipping, very well packaged. No problems.

I live in Iceland and shop with B&H ... they are fast and I will get my lens /70-200L IS) that I ordered last two days ago, tomorrow.

I nearly used B&H but they wanted photocopies of my credit card. Faxed, sent or e-mailed. To me that sounds a little dangerous so i went elsewhere. Only for cards billed outside US though.

It makes sense to me especially since you are buying out of the USA. They are just being cautious and I can't blame them since Internet fraud is such a common problem.

I agree they have to be careful, and a system does need to be put in place and currently is here (UK), ie. pin numbers for credit cards. The thing is though, mail, fax and e-mail is not secure, i personally feel uneasy about the fact that anyone who manages to intercept, accidentally or on purpose, would have my card to use on all sites that do not require such proof.

Also, get an American Express card that you have to pay an anual fee. Like Starwood Amex or many others. I like the Starwood because you earn hotel points for Sheraton or Westin.
Reason being is the paid cards have Best value guarantee, up to $250 back each purchase or $1000 a year. You can buy a lense from B&H, then pricematch it in a photo mag ad(like Shutterbug), they credit your account within 2 weeks.
Also you get an additional year warrantee on top of the manufacture warrantee.

I´ve bought twice from B&H. First a Sigma EF500 DG flash and then a Sigma 70-300mm APO lens. In both instances they were very good to deal with and good shipping and packaging.

Mind you I live in Iceland and when I ordered the lens, I chose 5-7 day shipping, I ordered it on thursday and it arrived on tuesday. I consider that fast!

I´ve done buissnes with B&H and it went fine. Living out of USA I had to send them copy of my credit card. I scanned it and sent it bye e-mail. I can´t see the benefits for them since if anyone want to make some internet fraud they could just as well manipulate a digital image or a photocopy of a credit card.
B&H doesn´t always offer the best prices but I think they are reliable and that´s worth something.

B&H is excellent. If in the UK, www.parkcameras.com is best. Warehouse Express are big, but park cameras are friendly and cheap and deliver exactly what you ordered, bang-on time and in sturdy packaging. They are fully-authorised, with every accreditation there is (Canon Pro Centre, for example). I rejected a Canon 1V HS from park cameras last week (because it had a tiny mark on it) and they exchanged it with pleasure (covering shipping both ways).

I will say this after my recent problem with B&H. If you know what you want then they have the best price and selection for a major store. They aren't a cut-throat, slash-the-price-but-then-charge-you-for-extras store. If you have questions about your purchase, you're better off going with 17th Street Photo. I've used Adorama but not for any lenses. I'd suggest the stores in that order if you already know what you want.

After commenting on my problems trying to get help in finding something over on FredMiranda's Professional forum I got several replies that others had similar experiences if they needed someone to help them with particulars via a phone order. If you can place your order via the web, they're right at the top of the list.

EDIT: added link to others' experiences with B&H phone orders

I think the general concensus seems to be B&H. (also where I got my camera and the rest of my stuff)

customer service with b&h has always been good for me.

Aside from having great service from B&H, I have also had good service from Central Camera in Chicago. They offer free shipping on orders over $50 that weigh less than 10lbs. Their prices are in line with B&H.

I've always bought my stuff from Adorama, they're very good. Half the time I'v eordered a grey market lens and I get the US model shipped to me instead, for no extra charge. They're fast and good.

Take a look at shopper.com. Prices and users rating of online stores.

Its more it being intercepted by someone else, same reason you shouldn't e-mail or say any bank numbers on a mobile, its just not safe, hacking is easy and i have intercepted mobile calls on my car radio!

by accident of course!!!

I've purchased from Central Camera (web and in store) and they've been very helpful. They're like a mom and pop store with very knowledgeable staff. Web site by the way is //www.central-camera.com with a dash between central and camera :-). Prices are reasonable and you can also get deals.

B & H is also great except that I think they're a victim of their own success ... the hold time for customer service (phone) sometimes can last 30 minutes or more. Once you get to a representative though, they're ok.

I have had very good luck with B&H, Adorama, J and R, Canoga and Delta International.
