I'm thinking about a good choice for a 4 year old. It would need to be exceptionally durable, small enough for little fingers, simple enough for little brain cells, and cheap enough for a parent that is already worrying about college funds and that stupid custom of weddings being paid for by the father of the bride.

Any ideas? She loves to play around with an old non-functional camera I gave her as a toy, and I'd like to nurture that hobby.

Does Fisher-Price make a digital?

Last year Barbie had a really nice one. Came with a little case and a little photo album and everything. Polariod makes a couple really cheap ones. I had the polaroid digital that didn't have flash though, and it only took good shots in direct sunlight. indoor shots were out of the question.
I'd check toys R us, and see what they have. They might still have the Barbie one. You said father or the bride, so I assume that pink would be ok for a girl. lol

I found that Barbie camera online for like $20. Original price was $70. There is a link here. Barbie Digicam by Mattel

The reviews on this camera say that it's good for a 2-4 year old. I guess it doesn't have flash, but it says it's good for indoor/outdoor use. I did have one without flash though, and it didn't take real good indoor shots. So maybe something to think about. I bet you could get this on ebay for real cheap.

No problem. Called my uncle, and he said my niece LOVED it and it took just fine photos for a child starting out. My niece was 8, so I'm sure it will work great for a 4 year old as well.

Just a bit off topic ...but... I've known several folks who shelled out 20--30 thou. for a wedding. None lasted more than a year or so. Just something to think about. After all, most of it gets thrown out with the trash or flushed down the toilet in a day or so. I've nothing against nice weddings mind you, but I had rather see the big cash go to something with some lasting cash value. A house or something.
Just an idea.

myqyl --

There are some kids' camera kits. I have an offer for a free digital camera as a premium for signing up for something or other. In the fine print it exlains how to get the camera WITHOUT signing up if you are a CALIFORNIA resident, by sending in a postcard. I definitely plan to get one for Isaac. Send me an email and I will forward you the relevant info...

It's on the way. Expires Monday, although I've seen the ad multiple times. Hope it's worth a $0.35 postcard!

Well, my camera is little more than a toy as it is. I think my dad paid like $100 for it. It also takes 10 12 seconds videos and functions as a webcam. ;)

Dont know if you have a comp usa around, but they have a 1.3 digital camera with a lcd screen for 49.95 after rebate.
It's a good deal, much better than the barbie camera which does not have a screen, and you can only take 6 pics. Also the barbie has a serial port connection. Here's the info, but it doesn't seem to show the rebate. it only lists a rebate if you also purchase a computer. camera info

OUr Walmart has two 2 mp cameras for about $100. Also, Ritz has a decent one for $100 after rebate. (fiji finepix A-101) (and free shipping)

Last Christmas, my neice got an intel play camera and it was pretty entertaining. It took stills and movies and had lots of fun creative things included in the software.

I just bid on a camera on Ebay for my nephew who has been going with me to take photos. After I got a great buy on the thing, I discovered it had no lcd display. I may end up keeping it, as it's a Polaroid PDC-3000 info

When I went to that link they list that product as sold out -- and no wonder, with the TWO rebates listed it costs $0.01...if only they'd get some more in...

camera for 30 bucks. Someone on Ebay is selling these cameras for 29.95, without an auction. It seemed to be something a four year old might enjoy.

I would spend more on the camera and teach her how to take care of it. I bought a cheap camera for my boys when they were younger and their pictures turned out terrible. They were not satisfied with the results. She might get frustrated, because her picture don't look like mom or dads. I would really think about buying something 2.0 pixels and up. If she wants to play and pretend she is a photographer then let her have the toy. I also owned a polariod and they are the worse cameras. At least mine was. Every picture i took was way to bright and the picture size was 2" by 2". If you buy her a better one she will have it longer.

I actually pretty much agree with this, which is why I've just let Isaac use my camera up until now. But he needs something he can carry with him when I'm not there, so I think I'll have to also get a cheap one, and help him learn what the different capbilities are. A 640x480 should work if not too much is asked of it...and a cheap camera today should be a lot better than one from 2-3 years ago...

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!!!! This was my first digital piece of sh...I mean camera. It isn't even good enough for children. The software was cool, but the photos were barely recognizable as photos.
