Ok so i have done some small searches for the subject, didnt see it, So I am new and trying to move to the lighting level, This maybe personal preference but if one person had a choice between a canon 580ex like the newest canon hotshoe and a gary fong sphere vs a aleinbee 800 kit package which would worrk best for all purpose, ex outdoors portrait and indoors, and just all around use, I need something to be strong enough to over power the sun for fill am i right would the canon 580 be enough since its more portable? please let me know what you all think

In general, a speedlight like a 580 brings versatility, while a strobe like an Alienbee brings power. Unless you have a battery or a rigged-up generator, the Alienbee isn't portable (it needs to be plugged in). However, a 580 will have more trouble overpowering the sun (though it is possible--you just need to be creative to do so).

yeah, it is totally a question about portability. The speedlight is very portable and great for running around and taking shots everywhere.
check out the Strobist Blog for tons of info on speedlights.

An Alien bee is primarily for studio work. If you think you are going to be mostly working in a studio, a good strobe is well worth the $$ and a speedlight can't compare

I sold my flash a bit ago and bought 2 AB-800s with the money from it. Never looking back.

We use these to power the AB's outside. I've not had much success overpowering the sun with 580's.
