I have a Mac and I use iPhoto. Which is fine for most of my uses. I like that I am able to access older photos on my Macbook directly.

But then I am not. As the space taken up by the images grow, I have to move them to external drives. All my photos are arranged inside folder names, usually keeping the original file names, ie

2009/07/25/XYZ.JPG

Yes, I use the month before the date, seems easier to sort that way.

But since my Mac keeps filling up, I keep moving months to external drives. Which in turn, also fill up.

I need to be able to keep the images safe, yet find them again. I want to change from iPhoto to something else, but what?

Aperture, Lightroom or something else (for Mac)

My main issue is not editing, but storing and finding again. Keeping track of originals and edits.

I am not a pro so I don't need triple backup and so on for most of it. Mainly essential family and friends stuff, but most is non-essential really.

Suggestions appreciated. Yes, I used the search function and I have been reading lots of interesting stuff the past hours, but I still don't know what is the better solution for me.

Whenever I empty my camera, it just adds to the problems. My solution for now is that I connect an external drive and the card reader at the same time, and transfer images from CF card to external drive directly. I then browse through these images and import the better ones, the ones I need right now, into iPhoto.

I am happy with some kind of solution which imports pictures to my Mac, I pick some of them as keepers or faves, then the rest are scheduled for external drive. Some kind of indexing that will stay on the Mac so I can find them later, ie small thumbs and/or keywords and which drive they were sent to so I can find the originals again, without going through several external drives.

Does iPhoto let you catalogue offline images, like on CD or DVD? If so, just burn them to CD/DVD, adjust the catalogue reference and you're good to go. If iPhoto doesn't allow this then Lightroom will and most probably Aperture.

I have expended many brain cells thinking about the analogous problem for my library of photos. I suggest that you get a copy of Aperture. Aperture has a capality to show and manipulate referenced files that are on external HDs.

1. Take Photos with camera
2. Import them onto my computer HD with Aperture
3. Cull blurry/crappy pictures
4. Keyword them (if you organize you keywords into a hierarchy, you obtain an incredible powerful photo search tool)
5. Duplicate the folder structure from Computer HD on my external HD (I do it manually but there are ways to write AppleScripts that will automate the process)
6. Use Aperture to relocate my files into my external HD.

Now files can be accessed and searhed for on my external. Aperture saves low quality previews incase the drive is not attached.

Thank you for your swift answers!

It seems like Aperture is the way to go.

I like the description of the work flow, Five_Seat. Any other comments to that? I would love to hear what other photogs do.

AND, I would be highly interested in some of these AppleScripts, to automate the process.
