Thanks to the "OIL" challenge, my flash got soaked in cooking oil.

I had it laying, button-side down, while I was tidying up. Somehow I spilled a bunch of oil where it was laying and viola, it was in a puddle of cooking oil about 2mm deep.

It was turned on. I turned in off and took out the batteries. The oil was into all the button openings. I left it oil side down on a tea towel overnight and it seem to have dried up quite well.

I wonder if I dare simply put the batteries back in and test it out, or what?

It's a Sigma EF-500 DG Super.

I'm such a spazz.

I smell a lawsuit against DPC! ;-)

So you're going to sue DPC for your own act of being a spazz? Add this incident to the Slippy roast!

I'd suggest spraying it out with some electrical contact cleaner. That will hopefully displace and remove all the oil, then let it dry out a few days.

you might try some canned air on it........to get out more

Dummy! LOL! I'd put it in a zip bag with silicone or rice for a couple days before trying to turn it on. At least it won't squeak anymore!

I hated the oil challenge - my entry is good but I spilled oil all over everything (except my equipment - thank God) and was cursing the person who decided on this challenge! lol

wrap it in a Shamwow! for a minute or two and you should be good to go!

You should be fine. Cooking oil has a very low conductivity (check that with an EE before suing me too). Some case mod guys on the net have ran their computers in fishtanks of oil, it looks kinda cool. The concern comes in the damage it might do over time to the rubber parts that don't get cleaned. ONLY TAKE APART YOUR FLASH IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! The capacitor in there can do you serious harm.

Edited due to my poor engrish :)

i remember watching a video of someone building a aquarium type waterproof case for a computer and filling it with cooking oil for cooling for no reason what so ever..(like submerging all the parts) and it still operated normally. Although I am not sure if they ever drained the oil....

My concern would be if there was heat generated by the flash that would be sufficient to burn the oil...

That sounds like something I'd have to go shopping for, I don't even know what that is.

That sounds like an easy plan.

...actually, it was my plan all along, to get rid of the squeak, ya.. ;-P

Sounds like a Class Action Lawsuit now!

Yes, we have some, and I know the wrapping-up technique, too!

This makes me feel better, thanks.

Luckily, the oil only got in the buttons. The flash was bent upwards. But that would be pretty exciting!

Oily flashes can be very toxic. Wrap it in 5 $100 dollar bills and send it to me for disposal...yeah, that's it!

Contact cleaner can be found at most auto part stores.

I would suggest waiting for a smoke challenge, then point the camera at it and click the shutter as you power it up and fire it for the first time. Could be an instant Blue Ribbon. :D

Toss in in the wok with a some pepper flakes, garlic, and ginger -- serve over rice.

Get some of that "kitty litter"-type of stuff that mechanics and tow-trucks use on oil spills. Bury your flash in it for a couple of days. ;-)

That´ll teach you not to flash your food, you pervert!

Remove batteries.
Soak in a weak solution of Dawn dishwashing liquid and water. Let air dry.
Soak in plain water. Let air dry.
Soak in ispropyl alcohol. Let air dry.

I have no idea if any of this will work. :)
