Oh sure post this just after I deleted all my fireworks shots, just a hour and a half ago getting ready for a road trip.

I actually have an old image where I did almost the same thing you describe, but the final version never came out right. However I think this tutorial may have explained the problem -- changing the blending mode of the added layers to Screen! I'll have to try and dig the file out of the archives and see if that fixes it.
Found it (from 2005) ... not an inspired layout I guess, but an example of how the blending mode affects the image!
