Alright... riddle me this batman... I posted on here awhile back about how I started running Ubuntu on my 6 year old dell laptop. Mind you it has a 1.8Ghz with 2 gb of ram (it was like 3000$ at the time)... Anyway, to make this as brief as possible. When transferring my files from my card reader to my Ubuntu laptop, I couldn't help but notice it is like FREAKIN WARP SPEED... I was shocked at how fast the files transferred from the CF card reader to my laptop. Seriously, twice as fast as transferring to my mac and no lie, like 8 times as fast from transferring to my wifes, newer 2.0 dual core 3gb of ram, vista laptop. Anyone know why that is??? I was just wondering cause I'm new to the whole linux thing... Its freakin sweet though...

I don't have a definite answer for you, but I would expect that the packets of data are being arranged differently and perhaps some underlying file transfer protocols are better optimized. The data packets on the other OS's may have a lot more overhead involved in the file transfer. You are experiencing the awesomeness of the open-source software model.

I need to make the time to install Ubuntu on my 6 year old Athlon box. I have a problem with the USB on that machine that I think is an issue with Windows and not my hardware. Once I install Linux, I will know for sure.

Dude... You just totally reminded me that I have an old laptop with a USB issue at my parents house, I have been dying to get them a working computer, and Ubuntu would be perfect... I would almost put money that says that the usb issue is a windows gig.

Anyway, the time it takes to install Ubuntu is about 20 minutes...LOL...

Lastly, the fast transfer is awesomeness because I am constantly moving files from flashcard to computer over to portable hard drive... Its sweet!
