| This is a little hard for me to do in the middle of a work day, but some of you may be interested in this free on-line photography course taught by photographer John Greengo from the PBS series Art Wolfe’s Travels to the Edge. It will probably be followed up by various Adobe courses. |

| I'm most interested in the lesson that airs tomorrow, but I'll be at work and in class during that time. Is anyone willing to take notes or post an overview of what they discuss? |

| I would love to sign up but unfortunately I am like the rest of the folks I have to work during the day. Thanks for sharing the information I sure would be interested if future free courses that are in the evening. Maybe next time. |

Class has started... If you're around and available, go hop on and check it out. Actual material haven't started yet; they are going through administrativa...
They just clarified the real-time classes are completely free. The catch is the *recordings* of the classes will be available for sale later. (That's how they make their money). This course will be available for $45 after it's done. It's not there yet, but it will be available from this web site.
Today, week 1 is overview and behind the scenes.
Week 2 is "the camera".
Week 3 is photographic technique
Week 4 is aesthetics.

I was very interested in the "behind the scenes" part of today's class. It was a detailed accounting of how they shoot the PBS show, the equipment they use, stories of how they travel and get around different parts of the country, etc.
My impression is that this won't be a strong technical class -- it's being taught "from the ground up" for the most part, but the images being used are very strong, and I especially think the final week's class on aesthetics will be a good one to attend.
Would it be worth the $45 to get a copy of the videos afterward? Hmm -- not for me, I think. It's going to be fun to watch for (hopefully) more behind-the-scenes shots and information about how the instructor works on the PBS show and such, which is very entertaining, but I think the series is going to be very, very basic on the technical level.
I did laugh-out-loud when he talked about his first experiences with Lightroom (now his workflow software of choice) -- [ paraphrasing from memory ] "For me, discovering and moving to using Lightroom to organize my photos had an even bigger impact then the whole move from film to digital."

Just a bump an reminder the second session starts in a few hours.
Also, for everyone's info, they have now posted an 8-minute clip from last week at the web page in the OP. It reviews what will be in the upcoming classes and gives you an idea of John's teaching style.

Sorry, just noticed your reply. You should have received an email with the link to the video. I'll PM you the email they sent me last week.
ETA - Well, crud, the email I received clearly says "do not forward this to anyone; only you can use it." Here, try to register using this link, and of course, be sure you use a valid email address.
I think I found the public link to their live video feed, which does not require a gotomeeting reservation.

Ah-ha! Indeed confirmed in today's registration email. You can watch the live presentation at either of the links below without formal registration or running that stupid gotomeeting application:

Yeah, they had to shut those feeds down -- their connection kept timing out, and it affected the primary gotomeeting connection.
The gotomeeting still has slots open; you just have to run the java client.

Don't get me wrong, this a GREAT class, and I really do appreciate the style of instruction, and love the images being used... but I can't honest say I've learned anything. That's not meant to sound arrogant; it's just that this is still a pretty basic class.
It would be a GREAT even FANTASTIC class for someone just getting started in photography, or someone who been shooting P&S for a while and wanting to "move up" to a DSLR. So, if you know someone in that category, this course would be a really great gift, etc.
To be fair, of course, it's only 1/2 over... Those last two classes may still hold some golden tips or tricks -- but I'm not expecting anything life-changing. I'm not trying to be hard on the class; nor am I trying to be critical -- no one ever advertised it as an "advanced" class -- but just settings one's expectation if you're thinking of ordering it.

Whoa, Sorry I must have skipped right past that. My mistake. Yeah... I was really wondering about if this would be worth paying for given the topics...
The last section is what I would be interested in but I can't imagine it being $45 awesome, especially because I think composition is something you learn from taking bad, uninteresting photos and then realizing why they are uninteresting.
Anyway... thanks for repeating yourself for my sake. |
