I've encountered a problem recently using my Nikkor 18-200 DX lens on my D80. Occasionally, and usually in low light situations, pushing the shutter release does not result in the shutter actuating. I push and nothing happens. I've checked all settings, reset the camera to factory settings and still have the same problem. It ususally seems to happen when my wife has the camera and she is irritated to the point that she is starting to fume and speak acquiring a point and shoot to use. No,it's not her fault it happens when I have the camera too. If I point the rig at a brighter light source I can usually get the shutter to actuate. This, however, is a pain and not a solution. This situation occurs even when the flash attached.
Another note, I can put my 50mm prime on and can take pictures without fail. Never a problem regardless of the light source.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this or any ideas what the problem might be? Have you experienced the same problem?

| I've had this happen as well, but not with the 18-200 (I don't have it). My gut feeling has always been that its having a problem getting focus lock, but I can't substantiate that. Were you in auto-focus at the time? |

| I have had this happen before, I am only guessing, but I believe it has something to do with the lens not being able to focus or find a focus point, Try going with full manual focus and see if that helps. Not sure it will work or make a difference but can't hurt to try. |

Most likely it is the focus issue. The 18-200 is not the fastest lens in the world so in low light it has more trouble focusing. The 50mm is a very fast lens so will not have as much trouble. Try swithcing to manual focus and see if that solves it. if so then it is the autofocus not able to aquire which will keep the shutter from firing.
edit: a little more info. You are likely in single servo focus mode (S). The camera will not trigger unless it gets a focus lock. You can change that default but then risk it firing when things are out of focus. You can also try Continuous Servo focus mode (C) as it is defaulted at shutter release priority. Hope this helps.
