Here are my opinions:
I didn't like worrying about scratching the lens so I got a lensmate (which matches the camera) and a UV filter for protection. People either seem to love this idea or hate it. It does make the camera a bit bigger, but I think it's easier to hold that way. I then can attach my macro lenses and polarizer to the lensmate. You have to get another lenscap if you go this route, b/c the canon one won't fit.
Do you have a tripod already? I use mine quite a bit. At least get a table tripod if you plan on doing studio shots.
I also have the canon tele adapter and lens which I leave together so I can screw off the lensmate and screw on the canon when I want it. The Canon adapter doesn't seem to screw on as easily as the lensmate adapter though. This is a useful lens, but rather expensive so you might want to wait on it.
A flash is a good idea. It really improves indoor shots - especially studio shots for me. I also used it in the woods to shoot some bears not long ago. I think that many people would suggest it as your first big add-on. I have the 420ex which is great, but there are others that work.
The G2 battery has a good reputation, but I'm not the person to ask about that since mine has been messed up since I got it. I do have a car charger which is great because I did find my battery running down before my memory. This shouldn't be the case though.
I have a 256mb card and use the 32mb as back-up. You definitely need more memory if you don't already have it.
One warning, be careful about buying camera bags before you know what goodies you're gonna have. Mine won't all fit in the bag now, but I do like the Lowepro bags ;oP
For filters, you can try //www.2filters.com/ .
I got my flash from www.bhphotovideo.com .
Lensmate is at www.lensmateonline.com

Any more questions?

I have a 256 meg card for memory like Indigo. Instead of extra memory for the long trips, I have a stand alone 20 gig drive that I download my memory card pictures.

I'm very happy with my G2 battery, so I'd probably advise you to at least try the camera out for a few weeks before you buy a backup -- you'll be surprised how long it lasts!

I've bought a couple of things for my camera:

- 256MB CF card. A big memory card is a must-have in my opinion. I can shoot and shoot and not worry about filling it up. I'm pretty sure I got mine from buy.com. You can always use our new pricegrabber store to search for prices, too :)

- Tripod. Pretty sure I got mine from Walmart. $20. Does the trick.

- Carrying case. Again from Walmart. Let's me take my camera everywhere.

hey y'all
thanks for the suggestions. I do have a decent bag and tripod already. i also have the 256 card and use the original 32 as a backup. ao you have any suggestions for flashes? i am a recent college grad so you can assume the budget is pretty tight. i am looking into the lensmate, which seems like a good purchase. i do a lot of travelling when i can get away and dont always remember my power cord or dont always have an outlet. is it a bad idea to go a few days without charging if you use it a few hours a day? I know that my true amature status will be showing through with this next one. is there a benefit of a table top tripod over my regular sized one? also, i am doing a lot pf photography for a company dealing with medical equip. i have never done much studio work before and any hints, etc would be greatfull appreciated. i know the G2 allows you to change settings based on light etc, but other than that and photoshop i dont have much. thanks again

I have the lensmate adapter of course (IMO it's a must have), along with a UV filter, a cicular polarizer (it doesnt seem to make as dramatic an effect as I was hoping... it's a Hoya, which I guess are pretty good), and a set of Hoya macro lenses (if you like macro photography, like I do, these are also a must buy, since the default macro capability of the G2 isnt that great. With the Hoya lenses, I can take some GREAT macro shots)

I also have a $20 tripod from Wal-Mart.

I have yet to get a flash. If and when I finally get one I'll probably go for the 420EX. It's out of my budget right now though.

Congratulations on your new purchase. I've had my G2 for the past 5 months and i've been doing well without any accessories. I bought a tripod, but that's about it. I think I'll get a lens adapter and UV/Polariser Filters. I'm also looking into the telephoto/wide lenses. Not sure if they're worth it. I do all my macros with the manual focus, hardly ever use the macro function. I'll see what I can get off e-bay. Welcome to team G2, and Merry Christmas.

Holy cow, how can I forget?!? I got a X-drive on E-bay. It came in last week. It's a portable 15GB drive on which I can download pictures from my Flash Cards. Paid $179 on E-bay. I'm going away for a week during Christmas, so I won't have to worry about filling up those Compact Flash Cards. I'll be able to download 7,500 pictures at the highest settings. Nothing like going overkill.

You can find a review at Steve's Digicams.
