I switched to a Nikon years ago, seemed the sensible thing to do. I cannot figure out what the big deal is though. It's not the machine that makes the artist use the tool for their craft. It's the artist.

Why do you hate or like Nikon?

My first (film) SLR was a Nikon.....At the time, the F80 was the best camera I could get in the pricerange..........It also meant I could borrow a mates Leses........

When switching to digital, again in the price i was looking, Nikon seemed to be pretty good (D90). No information i saw lead me to think the Canon was better, especailly not better enough to hAve to throw away the leses.

FWIW, a mate, without any other gear, also brought a Nikon 90 at the time, after doing independant research on all cameras in the pricerange........

Both Nikon and Canon are very good, it comes down to personel choice..........(waiting for flames from both camps now!!!)

Hey, Monet's brushes made the painting, not the other way around. ;)

Also, it's just everybody goes through a very personal choice for either camp, and usually makes a pretty firm decision, and even so, once they make it, it's a committing choice, so people will defend their choice pretty strongly. There is lots of jesting that goes on, as well.

i never switched to nikon, so it was never a sensible thing to do.

Of course its a subjective notion.

I switched from Canon to Nikon lenses when I got the S3 Fuji. I like that the Nikon glass, all the way back to 1970 will work, and with a minor modification, even the earlier ones will still work with the current Nikons. I like the feel of metal and manual focusing with the oldies. It's how I learned to shoot, and some of the glass is still awesome, even by today's standards.

I agree with the metal feel. I have an old 50mm 1.8 E Series that I love the feel of. All metal and smooth as silk. The manual focus is fun too.

I hate my friggin Nikon. I bought one because Manny Librodo and DrJones use Nikon. But the camera wont give me the same freaking cool pictures. I thought that when I had the Nikon logo around my neck that beautiful girls would automatically come to me and God himself would open te skies and give me a hand with the light.

Nothing of that. Definitely going to switch to something else.

Undoubtedly, but are they the chicks he wants?

I like both. I have 3 Nikon DSLR's and a Canon Powershot G10.
06/26/2009 06:29:34 AM · #13
I like both......I had two Canon A-1s and loved them.....when I went digital, the D70s simply fit and felt better in my hand than the EOS-300D.

Pretty much how I feel about Pentax. There is a huge cloud of really nice glass out there that can be bought for very little. The palette can grow easily for poor amateurs...such as myself.

However: if I had a pot full of money, I might have to re-evaluate. But I would likely start out hating Nikon!

My own personal vision of what's gone on here, which is probably about as much use as tits on a bull, runs along the following lines.

From some time in the seventies, say, Nikon SLRs established themselves as the ones that could go to work, go out on the piss afterwards, take a solid thrashing all the way and still get up and go to work again in the morning. Rough and tough, but with some serious optics and so on to make them an obvious pro choice.

When mr and mrs digital crashed the party (with a number of beautiful daughters in tow), Canon nipped in there with superior sensors. They had better definition and less noise (just a general impression - no personal experience involved there). Nikon retained their image and mystique, but also some operational ruggedness and, last but not least, an optical range that they ensured would still work with the new cameras.

So Canon were optically better (at the level of the sensor at least), while Nikons worked better in the rain and after falling downstairs. Do not try these things at home.

After the preceding film decades, the bite that Canon took out of the professional market was massive. Calling the rebel the rebel was a bit of genius, as it's easy enough to imagine The Man using Nikon.

I believe the gaps are closing, but this one's set to run and run.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Canon had solid film bodies too...

I think you're right (I had one in 1980-something). There was a top of the line F1(?) that presumably was built to an industrial brief, but somehow Nikon was the identified Top Camera...

Well I've been a Nikon lover ever since getting my 400D. :) It's been a bit of a love-hate relationship with my 400D, but I've had little experience with Nikon. I think I'm just a grass-is-greener kind of guy when it comes to cameras. But then, I've just gone and bought another much more expensive Canon body the other day, so I'm hoping to be converted to a fanatic Canon user with my new body. From what I hear, most people are very happy with their Nikons - I've never heard a bad word.

I used to have a Canon AE1 Program. It was a pretty solid camera. Took really nice photos too. Only thing I didn't like about it, is it was pre auto rewind and I managed to more than once get the film stuck inside the camera because I tried to shoot too many frames and pulled the film lose. Lucky I could take it in each time and have them removed the film in the Dark Room. Only once did I lose some shots because I didnt know it broke loose and opened the camera to find the film exposed. Was pictures from Game 4 of the 1982 World Series so it was a major bummer. Not too long after that auto rewind became standard in most cameras.

I'm not sure why you think people hate Nikon. It's just a choice one makes as to which system to buy into. I actually had a harder time buying my first Canon, because I am in the copier/printer business and Canon is a competitor.

What haters?

I honestly haven't noticed any.

You mean like this?

Yeah, you have to shoot Canon for that! ;-)

i like nikon because it has built-in flash remoting. :)

seriously, i bought the D70 the day it came out b/c i had an opportunity to shoot a major sporting event the next week and i didn't think the sliver 300D would cut it. once i was into nikon glass, i was in for the long haul.

people can argue all day long about what is better, but you're really just buying for the lens system.

I think it's just peppered through the site, and it comes from both ends. If someone wonders what is wrong with their picture, some exceptionally clever person will claim that it's because the photographer used a Nikon/Canon, whichever one they don't personally own.

These comments come from the same very clever people who take every opportunity to bash PCs or Apples based on what they personally own (and they couldn't be wrong with their personal decisions of course... and their decisions were obviously the examples that everyone should follow!). Some of these very clever people are still debating the VHS/Beta formats.
