I purchased a nice digital JVC camcorder several years ago....long before I bought my first digital camera...I could own a digital SLR now for what I paid for it years ago! At first I took a lot of movies...and, I really enjoyed playing with it...then it ended up in a closet-- out of sight---out of mind! Today I dusted it off...found the batteries and the charger...found the little digital tapes and I'm going to use it tonight. I have to admit I'm a little excited over the notion of using it again. My next door neighbor is having a birthday party for her granddaughter and there will be 14 screaming little girls running around...I'm going to use my digital camera too, but I thought it would be fun to capture their actions on video tape too. I was wondering if any fellow members of this group use a digital camcorder and edit their footage on their computers, etc..

I had all these great and wonderful plans of doing that with my Canon ZR85 Digital Camcorder...

Alas... Nothing really went anywhere with that...

I take better digital camera shots then I do movies anyway...

I use mine now and then, but a lot less since I got since I bought a digital camera, indeed they can be a lot of fun. I have a JVC as well.

I'm just about to buy a DV Camera. Not the analog kind that convert to digital, but the kind that actually record DV. I'm way excited, since I've learned to use Adobe PremierE, I'm having a riot editing video. I'm planning to take it along on a few photoshoots to capture some stuff you'd normally miss, and possibly put together some fun photo/video compilations when I'm done.

We'll see what happens I guess :)

I edit my home video with my computer. I have found that video footage is much like digital stills in that, you take a lot to get a little.
Requires a fast computer and incredible amounts of drive space along with some pricy software. An additional complication is producing a decent sound track to go with the video.
I use Adobe Premiere and Sound Forge. I understand Pinnacle Studio 8 is very good and easier to use than Premiere.

I had huge compatibility issues with Pinnacle. Whenever I'd introduce a new format It'd crash. PremierE, like it's sister Photoshop, is the industry standard from what i understand. I love it now that I know how to use it.

What audio problems were you having? Technical or artisitc difficulties?

My husband uses Pinnacle extensively with our digital camcorder footage, as well as from various other formats and old stuff that he dumps to the computer. He LOVES it. I can't make it work very well (I'm not very patient), but then again, I'm not an editor. He used the Avid at his work and says that Pinnacle can do a lot of what Avid can do, but on the consumer level. We bought a Sony DV cam at Christmas that he has been really pleased with. Pinnacle does eat a lot of space (along with space for the video files) but we haven't had any problems with it crashing. It does freeze occasionally, but not enough to make him go get a different program.

I got a pretty hot digital camcorder with my savings. However when everyone started going digital (in still photography) i didn't have enough money for a nice digital and am stuck with a crappy one. Movies are an interesting form of art in itself though, and i have a lot of fun with making movies. I'm not sure if i made a good purchase---
Good digital video vs. good digital stills

I like using my Sony DV handcam. I put together a music video of my daughter learning to ride her bike without training wheels. She took some great spills. I want to redo it because my understanding of editing tehniques has improved greatly.

Note: Never let your wife use the video camera until she has read the owners manual and passed a verbal quiz on it. She took an entire hour of extremely over-exposed video. She could tell something was wrong, but didn't bother to ask for help.
