Now before I tell you the story just let me say that I do know better, but we all make mistakes!
So the other night I went to bed and forgot to open the laundry room door ,that is where the Cats litter box is .Having a dog it is must to keep the door closed during the day when the cat is upstairs ,otherwise I would be getting some stinky kisses from the Gizz.:(
So when the cat came downstairs she could not get to her litter box and so she went under the computer desk and she pissed right on the power bar
Now this what happens to a power bar, when peed on

So if it was not for the Gizz barking and waking me up I would not be here to tell this tale.
Now I always had the power bars mounted under the top of the desk, but we have been doing some renovations and the computer desk was was moved ,and the bars were just on the floor.
So If you have your power bar on the floor ,YOU SHOULD MOVE IT UP OFF THE FLOOR .
My whole placed was filled with smoke in just a matter of minutes ,and 3 days latter I still have fans running and the windows open trying to get rid of the nasty smell and it's working .
Also FYI if you don't have a Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter in your electrical panel and this should happen odds are very good that regular breaker would not trip, and we don't have them as this house was built before the codes were change making them code to installed on all bedroom circuits.

wow. that was a close call, is your cat alright?
06/14/2009 11:25:23 AM · #3
Yes the cat is fine along with every body else in the house.
It was a very close call.
I posted this just because it all happened so fast .
After the dog barked and woke me up and I went to see what was going on ,the power bar burst into flames.
Had I not been right there to smother the flame with a blanket the situation would have ended a lot worse than it did.
This all happened in just a matter of minutes .
I know a lot of people have these power bars on the floor under or behind the computer desk.
So the best way to prevent this IMO is not have them on the floor.
I think this could happen to anybody at any time ,so if you have pets just hang your power bars on the wall ,they do have holes on them just for that purpose .

I guess this proves that if you pee on a powerbar you won't get electricuted. =)

Exactly what I was expecting. This was by far a crazier story, however. Glad to hear everything's alright.

Wow. Lesson learned; NEVER piss off a cat. They'll getcha!

Definitely a pissy situation. You're very lucky.

I just moved mine off the floor!
glad you all are ok

Thank you for posting this. I have one on the floor myself, bu not for long. I have one senior dog with dementia who has pissed right next to it before, but luckily not on it. I had not even thought about the fire damage!

Wow, I was lucky. I had a cat and dog and a power bar on the floor for years. It never occurred to me I had a dangerous situation. Thanks for this lesson. It would be good to share it with your local newspaper and TV local news, and the fire department, who run those fire safety inspections and classes.

Yeah, I think of PowerBar as a meal substitute; in my experience the electical accessory is usually called a power "strip."

I think the lesson to be learned in all of this is your cat is evil and is trying to kill you. I'd off the cat for pissing in the floor to begin with.........making matters worse is now you have to buy a new powerstrip(which hopefully you will plug into a GFI plug in if you keep the cat) and he woke you up from a good sleep. Reward the dog by feeding him the cat?

*** off to put all my power bars up off the floor ***

THANKS!

p.s. BAAAAAAAAAAD Matt! You're bad! :)

Rumor has it cats will eat you if you die. Maybe the cat was yearning for a bit of meat?

Cooked meat of course.

Eh, potato / patotto - who cares. I was just having fun. PowerBar™ did seem to succeed at branding that name though, cause that was my first thought - even when I looked at your photo, I kept thinking "where the hell is the PowerBar??" :-)

I remember doing some scans of photographs of their products to be used in printed ads when they first started up ... back in the days when the only "digital cameras" were $30,000 backs for view cameras.

I can't believe the title of this post was changed to "power strip"......I've always called it a power bar, never actually heard the term power strip. Maybe it's a Canadian thing?

I figure it is some kind of regional difference.
