I'm thinking of renting the Canon 2x TC to work with my Sigma 2.8 70-200 on my Canon 40d for an event. Does anyone know if there is any problem with compatibility between the TC and this lens? I understand that I loose a couple stops light, but what about AF? I've looked all over and can't seem to find the answer to that question. Thanks.

It should be fine.

AF shouldnt be an issue. My concern is that the end of the teleconverter that attaches to the lens sticks out about an inch. It was made specifically to work with the longer 2.8 canon lenses... for instance the rear element on my 24-70 is flush with the mount so I could not use my TC with that lens. If you post a photo of your sigma where it mounts to the camera I can tell you if it will work... or if the rear element is recessed into the lens you should be fine.

It does look like there might be the room you talked about...but here is the photo. So this should work? I can't find a rental place that carries Sigma TC's.

I have a Tamron 2x teleconverter and it works great with only EF type lenses, any of my EFS or "Digital" lenses will not mount to it. So with the Canon one Im assumeing that is the same and if your Sigma is a DG or Digital specific mount then no it most likely will not work. By the looks of the pic it "should" work but the best bet would be maybe take the body and lens down to the camera store and confirm that it will mount before buying it...

As for AF, heres my experiences, my 70-300 AF wont work, my 17-40 AF works, 50mm F1.8 AF works, my 10-22 wont mount to it as its an EF-S lens so thats a bust lol.

Well...we'll see how it works. I went ahead and ordered it for a couple of weeks starting this weekend. It's not expensive to rent and I won't have time to get to a store to double check the fit. It appears that it will work so I'll take the gamble for the cost.

I thought about just renting a long lens but first of all, cost was pretty prohibitive. Secondly, one of the events I want to use it for is the Civil Rights MLB game being held in Cincy this year. I have taken my Sigma in without problems before, and I figure a TC would be less likely to draw unwanted security attention than a big 'ol white lens. Obama has been invited to throw out the first pitch. Doubt he'll do it, but if he does you can guarantee that security will be a huge PITA. Even without him there, we are supposed to have such notables as Bill Cosby, Bill Clinton, Frank Robinson and others.

Also, I have an opportunity to shoot locally a new baseball team for the Great Lakes League here in my home town. Throwing out the first pitch on Sunday is one of my all time favorite Red's players, Sean Casey. It's the closest I'll ever have the opportunity to get some shots, so I thought these two events together gave me a good excuse to try out a TC.

I've been very, very happy with the Sigma since I purchased it. It's done a fantastic job for the money.

I have a 2x that I use with my Sigma 70-200mm - a few words of caution when using it:
- the resulting f/5.6 aperture slows AF down a LOT & increases hunting
- mine shows a lot of blue fringing on highlight edges
- overall image quality drops
- don't even bother trying to use it in low light, it's not worth the struggle

Now perhaps the Canon version will perform somewhat better, but still keep these in mind. Teleconverters are a great way to gain some extra reach, but you have to accept that there is a price. There are times when mine lets me get the shot and comes out well, and there are other times when it makes me want to throw it in the lake.

Sent ya a PM Judy. I always seemed to have decent luck using mine the few times I did. This was 300mm F4 w/ 2x

From looking at the rear of your lens you should be fine.

Holy cow! Wish my shots with the teleconverter came out like that - that's incredible!

For future reference....it does not fit. It slides on like it's going to fit, but never "latches" on. :(

I really wish we had a good photography store locally. No place around here carries anything like this. I guess I'll have to stick wtih the Sigma, but can't find them around here either, and THEY are not available anyplace I've seen to rent.

I hate to lay out $300 for something I can't try or see if I would use.

I talked with the guy at Lens Pro To Go and he is bending over backward to get something that works for me. They are overnighting the Canon 70-200 so that I can still use the TC for the two events I wanted it for. Not even paid work...sheesh. He gave me a nice break in a couple of areas price-wise (especially considering the overnight delivery) that made it barely doable for the budget. I better get some good shots!

Thanks very very much Paul @ LPTG. I highly recommend them for rentals.
