Found this crawling on some trimmed branches from a tree in my back yard. Haven't seen one before. Looks like an ant but I've not seen an abdomen like this before. Anyone have a clue?

Bug, no doubt about it. Six legs and antennae, gotta be a bug.

Scientific name for this bug is:

Redbugis ondpcus

I have seen these, We always called them wood beatles but I am sure that is not the correct name. Infact I would bet that redbugis ondpcus would be a closer bet. lol

If it had 8 legs, I'd say it was a spider. Luckily it only has six--I don't like spiders.

Judging from your photo, you have an early instar wheel bug nymph.

Glad to be of use. I usually keep an eye out for these threads as entomology is minor on the list of my way-too-many hobbies.
Just an FYI, these bugs and most other assassin/ambush bugs are pretty docile, but if you piss them off they can inflict a rather painful bite with their syphon-like proboscis. They are predacious and feed on pretty much anything they can find.
