I just got a Digital Rebel and I fully charged the battery and am now using (loving) it. I was wondering whether with this type of battery it is beneficial to fully drain then fully recharge several times at first. I know this is a good idea for some older batteries I have had in the past, but I am not sure whether it provides any advantage with these newer batteries. Thanks!

No you don;t need to do that. The Rebel uses a Li ion battery that has no memory effect. You can charge partly and discharge partly without ill effects. NiMH batteries on the other hand need to fully charged before use and then fully discharged before recharging to avoid memory effects. There is one caveat though, Li ion batteries have a limited cycle of charge/discharge cycles meaning eventually they won't hold a charge anymore.

Actually, it NiCad that has the "charge memory." NiMH does not.

None at all? Would that mean it's safe to toss them back on the charger every so often to "top them off," regardless of their level of discharge?

Hmmm ... I have an inexpensive Everready charger which uses a timer rather than a charge-level sensor, and it's a really slow cycle (like 12-14 hours) -- would that make a difference?

I stand corrected, it's the NiCd batteries that suffer memory effect. NiMH do not.

Only in your knowing when they were fully charged, and the extra electricity used trying to charge a fully charged battery.
