I know that my photo sucked, but man.. watching the average score drop every few hours has me saddened.. ah well. Poot! poot i say!

I'll do better someday. I'd put my outtakes in my pbase gallery, but if I did it would give away which photo was mine. So I shall wait. (not that anyone REALLY wants to see them anyway, after you find out which is mine..)

anyone else in my boat?

sigh.

thinking happy thoughts, Jen

Don't worry. I started at 5.7, now 5.3. The question you need to ask is how much do you like your photo and how do you think you could improve it in the future. I look at a lot of peoples galleries and see ideas that I didn't think of,then next time I try to recreate that kind of image. Its a learning curve and unfortunately along the way that curve will dip. Don't get discouraged. Aim higher and that way you will improve. I'm sure some of the great painters didn't start off painting brilliant pictures. Most of them died in poverty feeling that they had failed in their objective. By this , I'm not suggesting that you should kill yourself in the hope that one day you may be famous ;-)

Hey Jen….
One of my favorite stories (spoken like a Dad).
Before Edison invented the light bulb he failed over 10,000 times. When asked “how must it feel to have failed 10,000 times?” He replied……
I do not view it as a failure – I now know over 10,000 ways not to create a light bulb.

hehe, This is my first week entered and I've been watching the steady slide of my score into oblivion :) Luckly for me, I learned in college how meaningless "grades" are... I'm happy with my work and learning to make it better. Numbers are just numbers :) Photos are fun :)

Around here, anything between 4.00 and 5.5 seems to be average. I'm very average. : (

It is my first week as well and I am slowly slipping too. I know the photo I entered wasn't my best - so I was expecting a lot of the comments I am getting, and my score is about where I figured it would be - however, I have gotten a few comments that have helped a lot and that is what I am here for.

For the first time EVER my score has started above 5 and stayed there :). I don't know, I'm so used to 4s that this seems like a big deal to me. Last week was nasty, that photo was the best I could come up with after I had to spend 3 days over the other side of the country for my grandfather's funeral, involving 10 hours on planes getting there and back (one flight had to stop in Alice Springs for refuelling because of strong head winds), and then my first attempt at a shadows photo seemed like something I couldn't happily submit. It was a calming image for me after all that, but when I started seeing it from the voters' point of view I realised how dull it really was.

Anyway, this week's photo rocks and I've gotten really positive comments :). I'm happy.

One of my favorite photos I've taken this week...I really thought it exemplified a lot about 'city life' to me anyway. It's at a 5.1 now :-)

I do try not to care too much about the score. But at the same time, I want people to see my photo as I see it. Maybe I didn't do a good enough job this week of making my photo accessible to a viewer...after all my thoughts about titles, someone mentioned to me that they thought the title might prevent people from understanding what I wanted to convey.

But, live and learn. I still think I have a kick-ass photo, even if all you people don't agree ;-)

I'm in this same boat this week, and I'm feeling pretty much like I did last week. Both photos are some of my personal favorites, but neither one really hits you over the head with the topic, which I think is becoming expected. It's kind of a shame. I see the topic as more of a guideline for taking the pictures, not really for judging them. I mean, I can see if something is so off base that it's clearly not even taken for the challenge, but otherwise I like to give the benefit of the doubt and judge on the qualities of the picture.

Ah well. I know everyone that uses the site has differing opinions on everything, so it's no use beating my head against a wall.

For only the second entry, I'll take average. I know that I messed up the sampling, so I'll take the score and imagine what it would've been if not. Personally I thought there were many great photos this week, I'm pretty sure that my average votes were in the 7-9 range, but with several 10s.

I meant to ask, how does everyone vote? Some seem to be very liberal, yet others seem to be very strict. I think I'm somewhere in the middle. What are the basic elements people use to judge a photo - that is besides meeting the challenge. Expression, Composition, Image quality. I'm curious as to what others use.

I tend to agree. I think of it more as a guideline and still open for interpretation, and not the end all for a photo. Perhaps a really great photo that has no apparent connection to the challenge will only be negatively affected very very little.

I''m a teacher by trade and have a rep as being an easy grader. I normally vote based largely on "Do I like this shot?" giving between a 4 and a 9. Then I add or subtract a point for meeting the challange and I ALWAYS give the benefit of the doubt to the positive. If I''m certain it was way off mark, -1 or 2... A good faith effort, +1... Nailed the challanged, +2... (I know, a possible 11)... If I''m not sure the challange was there but can imagine SOME possible connection the shooter saw, I don''t do a plus or minus.

1 through 3 has to be a REALLY bad shot (none of which I''ve seen)

My biggest problem as a first time voter was commenting. It was taking WAY too long. So I voted on everything that was left (more than 50%) without comment and now I''ll spend the rest of the week commenting from the lowest scores up. The folks with the 9''s and 10''s aren''t going to be helped by my "Wow! Great shot" so I''ll use my comment time to tell the 4''s and 5''s that the cut off arms and legs were the problem.

But that''s just me.

ps ~ Sheesh, the teacher needs 3 edits to post! Where is spellchecker when you need it?!

As a first time entry and voter I am not sure on the comment part either. Right now I have only commented on the pictures that have inspired me to do so - either with a positive comment or one saying why I was scoring lower. Although - I am not sure if my comments are really helpful at this point since I am new to the site. I know that I have been helped by the ones left for my entry but I don't think I can comment on every photo. Like you said - will a comment of "great shot" really help someone if I already scored them a 10? I like the idea of commenting on the ones that were scored lower.

y'all assume that the people who took great shots know that it's great and that it's getting all 10's.

I don't think most of them do. We *all* hope our pic is well received. But there's no way to know it unless someone tells us : )

point taken - I guess I will just try and make sure I add something about why I liked the shot - not just that I did like it.

This is the best any of my shots have ever done. I'm actually above 5 this time! Either way, I was impressed with my shot so and I had a nice time taking it. So I'm happy.

This is my first entry and I'm hovering around a 5.3 (as high as 5.5 and as low as 5). I actually have a couple other shots of the same subject from different angles that I like more, but at the time, I thought the one I sent in was the best. Now I'm wishing I'd submitted one of the other shots. Oh well, live and learn, and go on to the next challenge. :)
