Hi everyone,

I'd like your help with selecting the best 3 out of the below 5 images. My high school daughter is being reviewed as a summer school student in a great art dept of a really great college. The university requires 4 pictures for final evaluation for their photo classes. We have one selected (not shown) and we need to pick 3 out of these 5. If you don't like 3 then indicate that as well. My daughter won't see the critiques so no worries there.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

#4 stands out immediately, I would add #5 as well.

* and #3, just realized I forgot to add the 3rd pick...

First impression 3 4 & 5

I'd say #2, #4, and #5. I actually prefer #3 over #2, but having two B & W shots might not show enough variation in her styles of shooting. My biggest worry with #2 would be that the highlights on the main flowers in focus are pretty-much blown out. #4 and #5 are definitely awesome though (especially #4!). :)

I find this fascinating--people's different tastes. I don't like #4 at all. I adore #3, and find #1 very interesting (though it's so large, I think that hurts it) I think #2 is the weakest of them all. If I had to pick a 3rd, I'd pick number 5.

4, 3 & 5 in that order. I REALLY love 4.

I like #1, 2 & 3.

#1 reminds me of Man Ray, so they will probably like that.
#2 You might want to consider entering because it is technically the best photograph (although it is probably the least interesting of the bunch)
#3 seems very mystical.

Good luck!

image #3 is great, and #1 is good, and #5 works. I don't care much for #2 and #4

Thank you for these immediate replies! Very kind of all of you to comment and all very useful for us!

As a lifelong photographer I can't begin to tell you guys how thrilled I am that my daughter has not only found photography on her own but has set her goals on fine art photography. She's 17 and picking between 5 top flight colleges with great art programs. It may sound kind of corny but wow that gets Dad really fired up!

The tough hurdle is going to be this fall when she submits portfolios. We're working on that this summer in between her college photo classes.

Thanks for all the input my friends!!!

Hi Wendy,

I'll link her the site... I think both my daughter and I can learn a lot here! Her interest has rekindled my photo juices and I'll post a few images as I come back up to speed.

I love 5, I think the close perspective of 1 is very intriguing. Of the ones left, the colors in 2 are great and I like the textures in 3.

4, 4 and 4. It's that good. (Honorable mention to 1 and 2.)

My picks, in order:

#3 - The best photo in the set. I like the sharpness, the angle/perspective it was taken, the composition, and the lighting.
#2 - Nice DOF. I like the colors too.
#5 - Like what a couple of people here said, it has an intriguing feel to it. The photo, however, is a little bit grainy.

Cheers!

I find it really facinating the differences in peoples opinions here. Some Love 4, others don't like it. It shows me how subjective photography is, and how much peoples tastes affect it.

So, what type of photographer does she want to be, what does she like......this should influence choice

Also, what are they going to be looking for......Are they going to want to see artistic flare (where the technicals are not as good, as they can work on that) or are they going to want technically good photos (and they teach composition) ie, are they an Art School, or a technical school. Both have merits, but knowing what they want to see also could influence choice.....\

I know, i am not helping here, but all of this would affect what I would put forward.
If you don't know, then a selection of very different photos could then cover all bases.

Good Luck and both fo you should be entering challenges here........

Herr Kaiser,

She is going to major in fine art (BFA) with a minor in journalism and maybe french. She has taken french since kindergarten and studied at the Sorbonne University to extend her language skills. In a perfect world she'd like to work for a fashion magazine but she understands how difficult it is to get that kind of work. I think a solid art based photography education will serve her in all areas of the business.

She will be at a U.S. Top-50 university and some have great art schools within the university and some just average. A good example is Duke, great university but the art school is just okay. Her grades are good enough to get into many great schools and now we have to select a school with the right combination.

The school she is trying to get into for this summer is a top tier university with a really strong art school. They will be looking at images from an art perspective.

And yes, we will both be entering challenges here! I'm an old film guy with Leica's and Hassey's and I have much to learn about PS before I can hang with you big doggies! :)

Best Regards,
Wheaty
