how does the administration go about eliminating pictures taken outside of the challenge parameters? While cruising through the results, I noticed two of them taken in outside of the week. Obviously this cannot be commented on during voting, because we can't see it. I also tried to take into account that places other than America use a dd/mm/yyyy system instead of a mm/dd/yyyy. Even so, they were still out of the set week. I also noticed one last week, (and no, I have no idea which one it was; I've slept since then) but assumed everything was kosher.

Now, before someone accuses me of being nit-picky, or having too much time, please let me say that this is just an object of curiosity for me, I am not "hollering" for DQ or anything, I was just wondering. How did i find them, I like to read what other people wrote and compare it to what I wrote. I have found that I can avoid other people's mistakes this way, and heaven knows I make enough of my own without other people's as well. :-)

How far outside the week were they? In my timezone, the new challenge starts and finishes at midday on Monday, 12 hours ahead of the time it starts and finishes for you. I could take a photo that was dated, in my timezone, the day after the challenge finished and still submit it... others can take it the day before it started.

The two I saw were both sometime in January, 2002. Don't think you're that far ahead of us. :-)

That's why the "Recommend for disqualification" button is there.

I can's speak for the admins but all of us moderators are just like everyone else. If we don't catch it ourselves or have someone bring it to our attention with the DQ button, then nothing will be done. I know I don't have the kind of time it takes to check these photos that closely and that is where other members can help. There is nothing wrong with using the DQ button and it will not reflect back on the photographer. Just vote as if there is nothing questionable about the phot and then recommend for disqualification with your reason.

But, what karmat is saying is: "The date is not evident while voting". Hence, you cannot DQ.

Okay, then unless Drew and Langdon check on these things during voting, we don't have access either. This sounds like something we need to look into further. Thanks for bringing it up karmat.

I'm sorry, but there is something wrong with you people! WHO CARES!!! DP Challenge is not giving away any award or money for your "winning" photos!! You get a dumb little ribbon next to your name! For God's sakes, why does every site that starts out as "fun" end up with crybabies and whiners! Pathetic!

rv,

while technically i agree with some of what you said, esp the part about people need to relax more considering how little is actually at stake, I think that your method of phrasing it basically guarantees that few people will listen carefully to your message.

just a thought...

It's not about being a crybaby, its about trying to have a level playing field for people who have only had a camera for a short period of time, vs people who have 1000s of good shots in their archives.

If there wasn't a date limit for the _challenge_ you could just enter
something you took years ago that fitted the current challenge, not
learn anything and severly disadvantage newer entrants.

If you're trying to suggest that I"m "whining," myqyl, then think again. I'm just a "tell it like it is" kind of guy and I just finished reading yesterday's annoying thread about last week's winning photo being disqualified and I had to speak up. I came to this site to learn some tips about photography and to check out people's work. Not to hear people argue and nitpick about nonsense. Comprende????

Gordon, are you for real? I'm sure, as a "moderator," you know about EXIF data and that 'date taken' can easily be obtained. My point is that if you feel that photographers on here are so desperate to receive a little ribbon on the profile page that they would stoop to such atrocious levels, is borderline paranoid. I'm sure the webmasters of this page don't want to have to check every friggin photo that is submitted. If you want to volunteer for that job, then go ahead and do it and let's move on.

again, i ask you, rv: do you think that your abrasive style makes anyone interested in listening to the content of what you may be trying to communicate?

i'm just curious...

It obviously was enough for you to reply. Sorry if you think it sounds abrasive, but I've found that some people on this site call a posting "abrasive," "rude," or "whatever" when they either 1) disagree with it or 2) it doesn't adhere to their perfect world. I've been having private discussions with several other photographers on here who feel the same way.

Do we understand each other?

When you call people crybabies and whiners it comes off as abrasive and rude. Well, in my perfect world it does, anyway.

I couldn't count how many times I read the word "whiners" in the past few days and they weren't all my postings, babycakes! I did read most of YOURS though, clubjuggle(??), and I must say that you come across as indignant. So take your pick. Snobby? Or Harsh? We've got it all for you RIGHT here, folks, on the DPChallenge forum! Whoo hoo.

This isn't a popularity contest.
Let's all grow up now.

I'll go on record as agreeing that rvicente sounds abrasive and rude. There's no place for that behavior, and that level of immaturity on this site.

"Enough to reply": is that the metric you use for the success or failure of your message?

Considering that I'm replying not to the substance of your message but to your style, which I am asking you to consider tempering, I would consider that your 'message delivery system' is failing.

Just put yourself in the other person's shoes: you obviously didn't like being called names, as you said, so why would other people like it anymore than you would?

It isn't so much about whining as getting your point across. I'm a fairly blunt person, but I realize that the form of the message often determines its reception by the listener. Saying to someone, "Your photo/post/whatever sucks, and you're a moron/snob/whiner." tends to lead them to say "Screw you!" Saying, "I think this or I agree with that, but..." tend to give people a bit more room to consider your words without feeling they've been told they are an idiot. It's a matter of deciding if your objective is to tell someone off or actually change their mind. It could be either, depending on the circumstances, but you usually can't do both at the same time.

rvicente, with all due respect, you're just a hypocrite and that's all there is to it. It's really funny reading you whine about people whining or rudely put down someone for saying you're rude.

Hmm, maybe there are just people who enjoy being angry most of the time. It can't be good for their blood pressure.

Okay, sorry I asked a simple question. If those who think I was trying to stir something up would read the ENTIRE post, and not just part of it, they would be able to discern that I was simply curious. Being married to a "programmer in training" I was simply wondering if this was done automatically, and if so, how, etc.? Or does the administration have to check each one of them. As far as I am concerned, if you want ot use a picture made in 1845 by someone else, scan it in, make spot edits and then enter it -- so be it. You are the one(s) that have to live with your self.

Actually, Lisa, I'm not angry at all. I've only been participating in this site for a few weeks. I rate the pictures fairly and give really nice comments when I like the picture and have developed some great friendships with some of the photographers by them private-messaging me to thank me for my comments. I'm not going to justify my comments on the forum to you, though. If you feel they are harsh, then I feel you are over-sensitive. I'll say it again, not everyone has to have the same opinion on here and the moderators should not be getting all bent out of shape when someone disagrees with them or anyone else.

Oh, and my blood pressure is fine as well, thanks for your concern. I'm at the gym 6 days a week which keeps my body and my heart in great shape. But you are sweet to care.

Hugs and kisses to everybody

I 'tell it like it is', too, but people seem to listen to me probably because I don't get personal or insulting about it.

Just because I'm talking to you doesn't mean I'm 'bent out of shape.' I actually find you something of a curiosity :P.

but again, FOR YOUR OWN BENEFIT:

no one will care what your opinion is if you're insulting about it.

this is valuable information for your own life.

You can take it or leave it, it's up to you. But don't act surprised when people react negatively to your 'style.'
