Hey everybody. I just had my second tripod break on my a couple nights ago and I want a sturdy yet affordable travel tripod. I go hiking up into the mountains a lot and want a quality tripod that is light, durable, and stable. I will soon be purchasing a Sigma 18mm-200mm lens for my Nikon and need a tripod that could support that.

If anybody could give me some helpful input or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. I've read several reviews on the net and I went to my local camera store and looked around at what they had but I just wanna check with my fellow members here on what they have to say.

Thanks in advance!

I have been looking at similar tripods and have been lusting over the gitzo 1541T legs with a RRS or markins ball head. That seems like the best setup for what we want out there. Carbon Fiber, with the whole package weighing in at just over 3 lbs. Drool.

However, it is probably the most expensive, and I just can't justify spending $850+ on a tripod right now.

Also an important thing to remember is that a tripod's maximum load capacity is only so important. For example, the setup I just mentioned can hold over 10 lbs of gear, but the tripod is only rated to 200mm focal length max.

Why is that? Because the longer the focal length, the more vibrations show up. While very strong, there just isn't enough substance in the tripod to dampen all the vibrations.

i love my manfrotto 190xprob tripod and horizontal grip action ball head. might be a little heavy for hiking though, i'm not sure. definitely affordable, you can get the set for $285 USD from amazon.

I have the Manfrotto 725B and I think it's great. Very light for hiking (3.1 lbs)

Inexpensive (I paid $113), sturdy, tall (64.6-inch maximum height, 7.7-pound maximum load), very lightweight (aluminum).

It has a non-interchangeable ball head though. There's a nice quick release plate, but you can't select a different head.

If I hadn't found this nice light one, I'd probably have gone carbon fiber, but those are pretty expensive!

(I think this is the latest version.)

I have a set of Velbon Carbon Fibre legs with a Manfrotto RC2222 Joystick Head. I really like the combination as it covers most eventualities and it's not too heavy to cart about.

My camera is quite heavy to start with and some of my lenses are quite old and heavy with it. I haven't had any problems yet.

I don't know what the USD equivalent would be (given exchange rate and the state of the tide) but it cost me GBP 220.00ish.(The wife is watching):)

This looks like what I'm looking for and is in my price range. I really dont want to spend more than $150 atm (trying to get that $300 lens as well, and, times are tough financially, :P ) Anyway, I found one on eBay for $130 ( //cgi.ebay.com/Manfrotto-725B-Digi-Tripod-with-Integrated-Ball-Head_W0QQitemZ220402471466QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item220402471466 )

Maybe I'll go with that.
