I took some photos on a friend's camera for one of the challenges. To give them to me, he uploaded them to his personal website in a simple folder. I saved them to my computer, but my computer won't read them. I've tried re-downloading them, but no luck. He can't re-upload because he's on the road right now. Any ideas?

seeing the camera you have, I assume you have the canon utilities to open your own files. Are they a different raw version? have you checked that? Were they encrypted in any way to upload them? if so it may have corrupted the files. Are you trying to open them in Photoshop? make sure you raw conversion versions are current in that also.

I shot them on a 5D, so the file extension is the same. I tried to open them in the Canon Raw software (I don't have photoshop), but no luck. When I click on them, a box pops up to ask if I want to download software to open the file (the box doesn't know what software will open it though).

He said he just dragged the files from the card to the desktop, then the desktop to the FTP, so I don't think there should be any problem with encryption. I could be wrong though.

Checking my PMs...

Ah....have you updated the software on your computer? It may not be able to read the 5D file without an update.

Boo, the deadline just passed. I'd still like to know what's wrong with these files, so PGerst, I'm sending a quick PM now!

...never mind. :)

Checking now...give me 5.

25 MB!?!? Wow!...Far from my 20D. :)

Yeah, that's why I was cutting it so close to the deadline! It took well over an hour for me to download them all, but my internet is pretty slow, and it appears yours isn't nearly as slow!

Were these from a 5D Mark II and not a 5D?

No, it only took 30 secs to download.

What are these photos of? I think I got them open...

Yes, it was a 5D Mark II.

The first few should be some really ugly shots of trees growing out of rocks. The later ones are moss covered trees along a dirt part with some big rocks in the foreground.

If they are raw files from a 5D they won't be nearly that big. 25MB raw files are what the 5DII produces. Even my 16.7MP 1DsMKII can't do raw files that big.

Yes, definitely 25 MB. I won't be able to open them with the DNG converter nor ACR because I only have Photoshop CS2 and I believe the minimum for those raw files is CS3.

I'm checking whether a DPP update will help....

I'm pretty sure you need CS4, but I also think lightroom 2 can open them. But I'm not sure. I don't have my desktop on or I'd offer to take one and see if I can open them in LR2 or not.

Stefanie, what version of DPP do you have? The latest is 3.6.1...but Canon's site is sleeping and isn't uploading the file to me.

I have 3.5.0.0. That version's not compatible with the 5Dii?

So the problem was with my program, not the files?
04/29/2009 12:41:39 AM · #20
Not sure....from what is seems, your version should be able to open the files...will know shortly if this update ever finishes....

...slow...slow...Canon's site is so slow....

It supposed to be....
The download of 3.6 isn't passing EOF, so I'm going to bed. I apologize for not being able to fix this now.

There are a number of people who have the 5Dii. Ask dwterry if he can view the images.

Hi Stefanie,

I left a PM with you too, but I wanted to post here for the public.

Upgrading DPP to 3.6.1 completely fixed the problem with the CR2 files! I was able to open them up without a problem.

Perhaps those files should be opened with 3.5, but I wonder if there was a firmware upgrade which prevented viewing under 3.5.

Anyway, upgrade to 3.6.1 and it will work. Canon's usa website is horrible, and download never started. I'll put in on my private FTP for you to download.

Paul
