Although I reckon the media, in a move unlike them, are blowing it out of all proportion.

I know that something is going around for sure. Supposedly swine flu has been diagnosed in Ohio - in a couple of counties over from me. Not surprising tho since this is farm country up here. I've been sick for the last few days with dizziness, lethargy, headaches, sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath - but no fever! I know a few other people who have had this too. Bleah...

I DO LOVE when they ADVERTISE a new "we are all gonna die" disease. Middle of Colorado here and already have many people showing up in the ER.
CUT TO NEWS CHANNEL---"Here are the symptoms you should be seen for immediately....If you have any of the following, you may have swine flu....fever, Nausea, stomach ache, diarrhea, hot or cold flashes, just not feeling well, hangnail, cough"
Hmmmm...EVERYONE qualifies when you give the most general symptoms for EVERYTHING. SHEEEEEESH!!!!

One of the issues that makes flu particularly difficult to control is that people are usually contagious starting the day before the onset of their symptoms, so they may spread the flu to people they were in contact with before they realized they were infected themselves.

Just for the record, Penny's an epidemiologist, folks. I'm trying to goad her into a more inclusive response :-)

No swine flu here in Alaska yet. All I have is a very bad back...neuro appt on May 12th cannot get here soon enough.....and now a very odd rash on my arms that broke out while at work Friday afternoon. Hopefully it isn't from the MRSA pt. I had worked with three hours prior to the rash appearing (which of course no one told us in radiology the pt had MRSA).

If I get the swine flu. I'm going to visit a farm and puke on as many pigs as possible. It's payback time!

Swine flu? What ever happened to the bird flu? Don't we ever have Human flu?

It's the animals' revenge for how we've treated them all these millenia ;)

I guess this wasn't the best time for my sister to visit Mazatlan, eh?

That sounds about right, for you... Sheesh, Slippy (and everyone else): there is a relatively small, but still significant, chance that we're seeing the beginning of a worldwide pandemic.

That's what's scary about this one: elements of all three. These things *mutate*, people... This is a scary mutation...

I went online to read more about this and what confuses me is that the symptoms listed (even by the CDC) don't seem to be any different than what typically come with a seasonal flu. I understand this has been quite devestating in Mexico, but is it possibly because of the healthcare system down there? Has it been different in the US so far because more people are getting flu shots? I think this leads to Simms original post that so far, the news media has done a great job of hyping the drama, but isn't really giving someone like me any useful info to work with.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the fist time the swine flu has been transmitted from person-to-person? I read a report today that said in the past it was transmitted from pig to human.

Also in another report today (news media) it said that *this* strain seems to be immune to the current flu vaccine. But they have found if taken at first signs of onset, the simple OTC Therma-Flu medication seems to work best.

Our local news has been warning people not to go to the ER unless it's an emergency because you have a greater chance of catching the flu in that setting. Currently in our area there has been no reports of sickness from this strain.

I had not heard of swine flu untill this story came on the six o'clock news this morning. We may have cases of it in New Zealand with a group of students returning home from 3 weeks in Mexico.

According to the CDC website there was evidence of transmission from a patient to health care workers who had close contact with the patient in Wisconsin in 1988. Link: //www.cdc.gov/swineflu/key_facts.htm

Blown out of proportion or not...Flu that mutates from animal to human are dangerous. I have read that one of these mutated strains can one day potentially kill a lot more people than a "rogue" nation with a single nuke.

On one hand it is inevitable that we will have another pandemic flu. In fact, we are overdue (on average). Is this it? Who knows. But it WILL happen.

On the other hand, the regular old flu killed 36,000 people in our country last year but we never hear about it because it's all old people and babies and that doesn't make us immortal, healthy adults worry...

I remember this, They closed down all of the schools here for about a week. They also stopped allowing visitors at the local hospital for a few days during that scare. There was another scare back in the mid 70's if I can remember correctly, I even got a shot for that one.

I doubt this it! The media always forgets about influenza. Horses and zebras! West Nile Virus is far more common then swine flu, at least here in Orange County, CA.

Well us near to the Mexican border are going to get hit first. So, if you dont hear from me again, I took Slippy's suggestion and went on a pig vengeance rampage.

There also some early cases as far away as New York, and with air travel everywhere, traditional patterns of epidemic spread may not be followed in this case.

Your rampage will do little good as the pandemic potential exists because we don't get it from pigs; this form has evolved to where it can be passed from person-to-person -- you'd have to exterminate everyone with a bad cough ... :-(

I figure I'm safe. I am in a rural town, nobody ever comes here, and I'm not eating at Taco Bell till it's over.

even after it is over you still run a risk of sickness when eating at taco bell.
