I'm taking a short trip to Cades Cove soon and wanted some advice. I have been there before, but never to photograph. I don't have a wide angle lens and I just bought a new suv, so I'm kinda wary about jumping into another lens purchase right now. How important is it to have a wide angle in Cades Cove? I would consider renting one.. probably a Sigma 10-20mm. I have the 50mm lens but an unsure if thats going to be wide enough. I want to take some panos and hdr of landscape, but am going mainly for wildlife, which I have covered with my Bigma. Any lens suggestions or suggestions about the area would be most helpful! Thanks :)

i've never shot wider than 18 there, though I can see how wider might be kinda neat.

if you are going this weekend, expect everybody and their brother to be in the area -- it is the spring rod run in Pigeon Forge.

You may also want to shoot jammur a pm; he lives near there.

Here is one in cades cove from the "100 year old" challenge

You'll want a lens with reach for sure, for the abundant wildlife, but there are a lot of great old structures (many of which you can go inside of, but they have low light levels), old cemetaries and churches, and some cool creeks and mills and such. Should be really nice, just make sure you use the bathroom before you set out on the circle... :-)

Hi and thanks Karmat for the info about Jammur, he already contacted me :) and I won't be going while the car show is there.. not a lover of hot rods.

I know a lot about the area, I've been there many times.. just never as a photographer. I was wondering if you really needed a wide angle in all that open space, surely my 50mm would be ok? I have a crappy 28-80 around here somewhere too..

I was also interested in any info on the best spots. Like is there a great spot to photograph a city overlook of Gatlinburg at night? or any other great spots :) Thanks!

just a thought but it sounds like an opportunity for a gtg?

Dana...you might already know this...but...there is only an Exit and Entrance and they go "one way"...if I remember correctly (and this is years ago) we tried to enter at the exit a real pain as the entrance was further on down the road and not just around the "bend". Wonderful place to photograph...haven't been back in years...

You will be kicking yourself if you take the time and money to go there without taking a very wide or fish eye.
I would suggest that you try to see Elkmont as well, while you are right in that area. My son Brad lives in Pigeon Forge, and works with Dollywood.
Here are some of my photos from two day trips around that area. If you look through them, you will see how the wide would be very useful. I used my picture stick (monopod) and self timer to get the high and low shots.
