You can start by reading the tutorials on this site. Go to the top right of the page, the Learn tab, and then tutorials. Alternately, you can Click here.
Be open to people's opinions, tips, and comments, but don't take them as absolutes. They are, after all, opinions.
Accept that just because you love something, not everybody else will. Be okay with this fact, and don't take it personally when you encounter it.
Have an open mind.
Practice.
Read your camera's manual to understand all of it's operation; this way, once you realize how you want to change how a scene is captured, you will have the tools and knowledge to accomplish it.

get close up and personal! I think the first rule of photography is to be a lot closer than you think. It's amazing the number of times you can grab a typical so-so photo taken by someone and crop a good chunk away and have something very worthwhile.

Check the minimum distance that your camera wants you to be from your subject; the autofocus may have problems if you're too close.

Here are some dpchallenge photos taken with the same model: Powershot A520

YThe shot you are trying to take is a macro so read that in the manual for your camera if you have it. If you don't you should look around for it on google. Basically you need to turn on the macro function which looks like a flower.

Just a quick thought, when taking photos of flowers, are you using the Macro Mode on the camera? That's the button with the flower on it on the dial.

It is below the set button, next to MF on the dial at back on the right of the body.
