Hey, I have used a $30 tripod for long enough. It's time I invested in a good one. I hardly ever use it anyways, but when I do it would be nice to have one that isn't subject to light winds and can also pose shots vertically instead of just horizontally. Also, one that can get rather low to the ground (about 12" minimum would be nice). Max height I'm not too worried about. As long as it can get up to average eye level (like 60").

What are some good brands to start with? I've heard of Manfrotto and Slik.

However, I'd also like to stay in the $100 to $150 range (for legs and head).

Do NOT buy the Manfrotto 785B. I love the legs. It's nice and portable, but the cheap plastic head is not meant to support an SLR. It was barely adequate for my Rebel when new and is now too weak. I did some mods, however, and put a stronger ballhead on it.

Here's my $53 Amvona set up -- those deals are probably gone, but you can still do pretty good with an Amvona (though I have since replaced the head with a much better one, the legs are still standing strong)

Feisol has received good reviews on other sites (luminous landscape among them). Prices seems good in comparison to other CF systems, but maybe a bit above where you want to be.

This is a little over your budget at $205, but I think it meets your needs well. One thing to consider is what kind of photography you intend to do with it though, which will dictate the type of head you want (pan/tilt vs ball vs geared vs 3-way). The one I'm linking to is a ballhead, and the setup is capable of supporting 10 lbs of camera gear total.
