Hey everyone,
Thankyou for all of your support in this most recent challege. I appreciate all of your comments, critiques and praise. However, it has occured to me that I did not read the basic editing rules clearly, and hence, they were not followed to their fullest extent. My process included adding a layer to which I applied a Gaussian Blur, and adjusted the brightness to seemingly darken and blur the edges to focus on the subject of the photo, using the eraser tool to blend the sharpened image from under the blurred. The entire time, I thought I just had to avoid cloning and the layer effects. After placing first in the challenge, I received a "Proof" request, which made me re-read the Basic Editing Rules. These rules state that : "no effects filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian blur, the two of which are allowed. Any filter permitted by this rule must be applied uniformly to the entire image. Selective application of the filter is prohibited." Here is where I failed the challenge. I am quite embarrassed that I did not notice until after the results were in, and I apologize to everyone who submitted their work. It was unfair for me to win, and I deserve a disqualification. Lesson learned - I must read more carefully.

Man, don't i feel like a newbie.

That's a bummer. The shot is so beautiful that it would probably have been just as great without the gaussian blur and brightness adjustment. Would love to see you post the original.

That is a bummer. It is one of my favorite shots. But thank you for standing up and saying hey, I made a mistake. I think that shows real class. :)

Just my $1.35 (inflation ya know)

It's a bummer for you you to lose a ribbon when you didn't intentionally break the rules, only were ignorant of them. It is a double bummer for the whole dpc community to see two images we voted tops go down. I'd like to compliment you for your honesty and forthcoming attitude. I'd also like to compliment the manner in which you used the tools illegal under Basic rules. Sounds to me like you were trying to bring out the best in your image, and that, IMHO, is the intention we had in mind when the site adopted the Advanced rules. Please keep submitting.

ORIGINAL SHOT IS AWESOME TOO,JUST LITTLE CONTRAST AND YOU GOT A WINNER !

Sometimes editing ruins the photo especially on flowers.

Sad to see this image go..but I have absolutely no doubts that you will be back in amongst the ribbons before long.

Major oops, but thanks for the note.

It would be most helpful if everyone would put such a description of the processing steps in the "additional Info" area when submitting the photo -- it is interesting and educational and completely non-incriminating if you are following the rules.

Even though you lost the ribbon, people love the photo. I would put it in your portfolio and upload it to DPCPrints! I am sure you can sell it :)

Wow, would have been a blue ribbon on your 1st challenge. I wonder if anyone has ever done that before? Congrats anyway and thanks for your honesty.

Its a great photo, and I am sure we will see you back up in the ribbons in no time.

PS...this is not meant to be derogatory to little girls :)

At least we didn't have to face this problem:

That's too bad. It's a beautiful image and is certainly a winner in my book. It doesn't sound much like cheating (why would anyone want to use Gaussian blur on the entire image anyway?). I've done some nice shots today that I wouldn't be able to enter because I used Gaussian Blur to create shallow depth of field. My camera is way outdated (Nikon Coolpix 700 bought in 1998) and it is impossible for me to create shallow depth of field at the time of the shot so shots that would look great taken with a 35 mm SLR look sub-par without touch-up. I only just discovered Gaussian Blur for this purpose and love it. At least I have a hint on how to blend the edges. I've been working with this technique all day and that's been driving me crazy.

You certainly handled it very graciously. The editing you did wasn' t much different then the type of fiddling that would be done in a traditional dark room. I wouldn't worry to much about the ribbon if you are disqualified (I'm not quite clear on that yet). It is truly splendid.

Maybe you could also upload the image for the challenge to your portfolio so as to allow a "side by side" comparison of the two?

'doesn't sound much like cheating'?
PLEASE read and UNDERSTAND the rules.
You have had a DQ and a voluntary DQ and alot of heat over your 'error' on the rules (and your ethics), and now this comment.
We have rules here, and EVERYONE needs to respect and follow the rules.
If you have a problem with the rules - as i said before, then leave this site to those of us that wish to follow the rules and not deride them.

It is refreshing to see someone take a DQ as graciously and correctly as you. I somehow have a feeling we will see your name by ribbons in the future.

Welcome to DPC.
