I have a 580ex II flash and I'd like to start using it off camera. I'm looking for opinions on what to buy and if it's easy to use. I'm willing to spend a little extra money for simplicity and reliability. Thank you.

Bogen super clamp + Adorama brand tripod mount with hot shoe. The umbrella in the photo is a Westcot 32 inch silver. you should also try Strobistfor some other ways to rig off camera.

i found the canon trigger to work just fine with the 580exll if you want to save and not get pocket wizards.

CyberSyncs by Paul C. Buff.

They work. Oh, plus that stuff that roby21112 mentioned, especially the Strobist part.

by the canon trigger you're talking about the st-e2 ?

i find it works pretty well - but line of sight between flash and trigger are key ! - at least in large rooms or outside - in a smaller space the IR will bounce off walls... etc.

Another trigger option is the Radio Popper. If you're interested in using non-line of sight ETTL/ high speed sync these would be right.

st-e2 works for me. pocket wizard has a new unit coming out that has a hot shoe attached to the top, so you can transmit to other flashes while triggering a unit on camera.
look for the "mini tt1"

Not that I'm getting one right now but do they have a receiver that has a hotshoe or is it pc only? Guess you could get a hotshoe pc adapter but there's another added cost.

I don't believe they do. Places like FlashZebra stock the hotshoe to pc adapter (about $12).

My understanding as that the 580ex II has a port on it that the cybersync will plug right into with the supplied cables/adapters. You only need the hot shoe adapter if you have the 580ex (ie non II).

I use the Cybersyncs with my 580EXII's they come with the cables needed. They are extremely reliable and a whole lot cheaper then the PW. Also a bit smaller.
