Today we were offered the opportunity to photograph a basketball game featuring the Cincinnati Bengals vs our local teachers.
I haven't shot in a basketball court before. I'll be bringing my D200, SB600, and a tripod. Anyone have some tips for me?

The tripod is probably not a good idea for basketball. It's gonna be in your way and limit your mobility with the camera.

she could possibly use the tripod like a monopod. i hear what you're saying though.
it also might be possible to set the sb600 ON the tripod - if she's got a means to remotely trigger it effectively.

they are actally very helpful for the first few times shooting. i outgrew mine once my arms got strong enough to hoist my 70-200 with the extender on it. but for first-timers its a big help |

you won't need any form of support shooting sports. You're shutter speed should be so that the action will be frozen, if you need a monopod, you're not doing it right.
You're gonna need to be in AF servo mode, or the Nikon equivalent, an ISO/aperture combo to be at about 1/250 (at least) meaning you might have to be at ISO 1600 and f/1.8 in some situations. Basketball stadiums and arenas are better lit than the wrestling shows and sports I've done so you might get away with F/4 or ISO 800 but whatever, you'll need a fast shutter speed regardless of the surroundings.
I also wouldn't bother with the flash, unless you can set it up away from the action. This is because it'll distract the athletes and mess up their game. I've been in plenty of sports events where there's some newbie at the front blinding everybody with his flash and getting in everybody's way and messing up the performer's concentration.
Funnily enough, I only see them at 1 event.
Just have fun, don't use the flash and use it as an opportunity to work on your timing. |

| If you are anticipating a specific shot like for instance a player dunking the ball, Pre-focus on the front of the rim, use the multiple exposure setting, start shooting as the player is going up for the shot. You will probably have 1 or 2 good captures. Another example would be a jump ball. |
