I don't own one, but I was reading this huge thread on this 99 error being experienced on the Digital Rebel.

Has anyone experienced this yet? Also... anyone with a 10D that had this error??

Here is a link to the thread:
99 Error on 300D

I've taken at least 1500 shots with my rebel in the last 3 months and no problems here.

From what I have read, this happens when the camera cannot communicate with the lens. It seems to happen with the older Sigma lenses which in most cases could be rechipped to work.

Haven't experienced it with the two Canon lenses I have.

No problem here either. I agree with vince, from what I have read it would have something to do with the lens being incompatible.

i have had it, seems like it gets fixed by turning off cam and take out battery for a sec and replace

I experienced it for the first time with my 10D this past weekend (after a year of shooting). I knew my battery was running low at the time, but kept on shooting. When I saw the Err 99, I replaced the battery and all was well again. Whew!!

there was another thread about the shutter sticking on someone. Another wrote that some dust might have gotten into it. Recently I was out on a windy day taking shots & changing lenses quite often. I experienced the same problem. I have to press my shutter all the way down to get it to come back on after going to sleep. I am returning it 2morrow fro a new one.

Yes, I know this error very well. I did massive amounts of research on it too!

Okay, here's what happened to cause my Error 99: I used an OLD lens. It's only 5 years old, but it's an EF lens, non-Canon. I called Canon and also called Quantaray, after reading about this error for hours online. It appears that the old Sigma & Quantaray lenses (mine is a 70mm-300mm) throw the Error 99 almost all the time I use them (manual or automatic). This saddened me, but I had to face it, it was built before digital cameras were popular.

So, I bought a Canon 70-300mm lens on Ebay and it works perfect. no more Error 99!!! I tried to trick the camera a few times by switching lenses and it always caught me. It knows old technology when it sees it.

I don't know if this is your problem, but from now on... I am a canon girl all the way, no more 3rd party canon-wannabe products. I just can't spend that kind of money on a non-compatible product.

Good luck!

I get these errors sometime on my 10D with Canon 24-70L lens. I think in my case it is the memory card.

I've had it on my 10D with a few lenses, I tried a sigma 35-80 (5yrs old) got the error, tried a sigma 500 mirror, got the error, tried a strange russian 16,, fisheye (M42) with EOS adapter, got the error.

I now buy ONLY canon lenses and have never seen the error with one of those.

Perhaps some Sigmas are compatible. I don't know. I have a quantaray, and can't use it. I read that Sigma & Quantaray both throw the Error 99 if too old of a lens. New Quantaray & Sigmas should not throw an error, but I am still going to stick with Canon. After having to buy a new lens due to this problem, I don't want to waste that kind of money again.

I had the error 99 from my Sigma 28-105mm lens.It had to be rechipped and Sigma does that for FREE. All you have to do is contact them and find out where to send it. When I got my lens back everything was just fine. No more error 99.

Just got this error 99 today. Turned off the camera and then back on and all seemed well, later in the day, the viewfinder went very dark for about 10 shots, focus light would not blink red in view finder and then I hear this slow "ka-chunk", brightness in the viewfinder returns, red blink returns for focus. It sounded like a stuck shutter. Anyone else ever get this scenario? If so, what was your ultimate outcome?

I used to get the notorious error 99 on my 300D at annoyingly random intervals with my kit lens. After tinkering around for at least three months, I figured out that it was temperature and moisture dependent -- the lens contacts of every lens are built with slightly varying lengths of protusion towards the lens contacts, and the slight variance would make the contacts work in one weather and not in another. I added a tiny bit of solder to the tips of my lens contacts on the camera, and I haven't seen the error 99 in over a year now.

Hey rblanton - Canon EOS-10D

I was getting the 'error99' after every shot I took...turn it off and back on...all okay...for another one or two shots.
Took it into Canon (Perth) and three days later had my 300D back and working perfectly. The "Shutter Box" had gone south on it...No problem since and that was about 6000 shots ago. So very happy....so far

Shutter box...ugh..it made noises from that direction. Though just once, it has not repeated. I will shoot some test shots tomorrow and see what results. Thanks.

I've had it both on the 1D and on the 300D... it was the lens not the camera.
