So if I buy a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX will I be able to start geocaching right out of the box or do I need to buy a $100 worth of software and/or maps to make it work?

You will be able to use it right away. You will just have to enter the coordinates manually.

It appears that it comes with USB drivers so it's possible you could hook it to the computer and use one of the Geocaching apps to download cache information. But again it's not necessary.

It has Geocaching feature in it already also. never used it myself. I have the 60C, that I am going to probably sell, now that I have the Oregon 400T and very happy with it.
I actually got a new Garmin City Navigator update disc in he mail recently ($100 software) for that 60C.

You can get started right away, just get your coordinates and away you go. As for software there is a lot of free ware that will help download locations and track past finds.

I purchased the Magellan Triton 1500, but I got one that didn't come with detailed maps. I had to purchase a map for the North East for something like $60.

However, I'm new to the whole thing and the only cache i've found is a virtual one. I'd love to try one of Vinny and Sues PUC caches, but live too far north for that. Right now I'm just waiting for the snow to melt and it to get a litle warmer outside (today's high was 18F).

if you are a GC.com member you can DL straight to it via USB I believe.
I got GSAK ($30?) for software and am a GC member - so I run a query that emails me a GPX file that I then load into GSAK. From there I can DL to the Garmin 60Csx that I have. Much better than typing in coords.

Then I went one step further - I got a Palm pilot off ebay (30 for an old one and $60 for nice color one)-most anyone will work but the color ones are nicer than the older 3 or V models. I then got Cachemate software ($25?) for it. GSAK will spit out the file that sync into the palm automatically. Cachemate runs on the palm.

You then don't need paper anymore, get all the logs, clues, decoding capability, searching, etc on the Palm. Newwer palms can talk to the Garmin I think but I've not tried that (gotta buy a cable for it).

You can then log on the Palm and when you get back to the computer upload it to a website (logger...ihave the link somplace) and it will log your finds on GC.com automitically, notes, travelbugs - all of it.

The 60Csx is awesome, accurate and wonderful!

There are links, info, and instructions here at gpsfiledepot.com. Alot of garmin stuff and maps (FREE) to load up on a GPS. I am sure some stuff works with Magellan, but never looked.

I do something called Letterboxing with my wife & daughters. No GPS necessary, which is a nice break as I have to use a GPS whenever I do exploration fieldwork. The kids love it and they're so proud when they find a box. But they do get pretty competitive with each other and angry-faces happen sometimes.

Well I'm off and running. UPS dropped GPSMAP 60CSx off yesterday. Seems to be a nice unit. We found 2 caches today. Kids are loving it. Great fun and exercise too! I'm looking forward to placing my own soon.

Geocaching was one of the things that helped me start photography. I had started caching and you get to see tons of hidden gems that people have found. A lot of people put caches in their favorite places and it is awesome to see some of these places shared. I had started taking pictures of places I had been to and then just started taking more and more photos. My friend got me into caching way back when ago, then I ended up finding a ton more than him. Then, I introduced my dad into caching and he went way over my couple hundred finds and has found I think close to 2000 now.

Your GPS should be just fine. I remember starting out and finding caches on that cheap yellow Garmin. No maps or nothing, just an arrow pointing the way to go.
